Historical Description

BRISLINGTON is a parish and village on the high road from Baith to Bristol, and partly in the city of Bristol, with a station on the Great Western railway, St. Anne’s Park station being also within the parish: it is 1 ¾ miles south-east from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county of Somerset, hundred, union and petty sessional division of Keynsham, county court district of Bristol, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Luke is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch, and a fine embattled western tower, 90 feet in height, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1884 a new organ was introduced, at a cost of £270, and a new chiming clock presented to the church by Dr. C. H. Fox in memory of his father, Dr. F. K. Fox, of Brislington House, to whom the west window is also a memorial: there are memorial windows to W. H. P. Stephen Gore-Langton esq. of Newton St. Loe, d. December 11, 1873, and to the late R. P. King esq.: the church was restored in 1873—4 by subscription, when the chancel was lengthened and a transept added at a cost of £2,740: in a niche in the tower above the south porch are two figures supposed to represent Lord and Lady De-la-Warr, the reputed founders of the church: the church now affords 470 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566, but is mutilated. The living is a perpetual curacy, with residence and 7 acres of glebe, net yearly value £175, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Alfred Richardson. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Congregational chapels. In St. Anne’s Wood, near the Avon, and opposite Crews Hole, is the ruined well and chapel of St. Anne, formerly a noted place of pilgrimage, visited both by Henry VII. and his Queen, Elizabeth of York; a ferry, which still exists, formerly conveyed pilgrims across the Avon: the chapel dates from the end of the 13th century, and was founded by Roger, first Lord De-la-Warr. The charities abound to £28 per annum, which is partly distributed in kind. There is a private asylum for the upper classes, licensed for 105 patients. Brislington Hall, the seat of Alfred Clayfield-Ireland esq. J.P. is a mansion of stone at the south end of the village. Brislington Hill House, the residence of Mrs. Cooke-Hurle, is an ancient edifice of partly brick of the 17th century, also at the south end of the village. Southfield House is the residence of Joseph Cooke-Hurle esq. M.A., J.P. Earl Temple, who is lord of the manor, Alfred Clayfield-Ireland esq. and Jsph. Cooke-Hurle esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and red sandstone; subsoil, Pennant stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and cats. The area is 2,289 acres of land, 20 of water, 3 of tidal water and 4 of foreshore; assessable value, £13,433; the population in 1891 was 1,771, including 74 inmates and 92 officials &c. in Brislington House Lunatic Asylum.

National School, erected in 1859, for 324 children; average attendance, 114 boys, 74 girls & 80 infants.
