Historical Description

BROMPTON-RALPH is a parish and village on the high road between Wiveliscombe and Watchet, 4 miles north from Wiveliscombe station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 10 north-west from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred, union and county court district of Williton, Wiveliscombe petty sessional division, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone of Late Decorated character, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle with an arcade of three arches, south porch and a battlemented tower containing 4 bells: the windows generally are Debased Gothic: the benches are good examples of early oak carving: the church was almost wholly rebuilt in 1738, and enlarged in 1847, and restored in 1881—2, at a cost of £823: there are sittings for 258 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £340, including 113 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1898 by the Rev. Alfd. Ernest Wansbrough M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel. There is a charity of £2 10s. yearly value, known as the “Stevens’ Charity,” derived from investment in Consols, and distributed by the rector for the time being. Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor; the Rev. William Sweet-Escott B.A. rector of. Leigh, Worc, and Miss Blommart, of Willett House, Elworthy, are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, slate stone. The area is 2,736; rateable value, £2,911; the population in 1901 was 320. Board School (mixed), built in 1877, for 94 children; average attendance, 45.

Under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act, 1882, Brompton Cottage has been transferred from this parish to Tolland.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 16 March, 1875, for the united district of Brompton-Ralph & Tolland.
