Historical Description

BROMPTON REGIS, locally known as King’s Brompton, is an extensive parish and village on the high road between Dulverton and Watchet, 5 ½ miles north-east from Dulverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 7 north from Bampton and 12 south from Dunster, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton, petty sessional division and union of Dulverton, county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the late Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in the chancel is a brass to the Dyke family, dated 1622: in 1896 a stained window was placed in the chancel by the Rev. E. Warre D.D. headmaster of Eton College, and in 1897 a fine organ was provided: the interior of the church was renovated in 1887, and in 1895 the tower was restored and a new altar table and furniture provided by private subscription: in 1901 a brass was placed in the south transept recording a legacy of £500 by the late Stuckley Lucas esq. of Baron’s Down, to the vicar and churchwardens for the benefit of the poor of the parish: there are sittings for 300 persons. The registers date from the year 1689. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £350, including 67 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1894 by the Rev. William Jesse Batchelor M.A. of that college. There is a Bible Christians’ chapel erected in 1854. The charities consist of the Dyke dole and a legacy of £500, left by the late Stuckley Lucas esq. amount to £518. The Brendon Hill iron mines, partly in this parish, are now disused. The neighbourhood affords facilities for shooting, fishing and hunting, and wild red deer abound in the district. Baron’s Down, the property of Charles Bere esq. of Milverton, and occupied by the Rev. Edmond Warre D.D. headmaster of Eton College, Bucks, stands in a very pleasant part of the parish, overlooking the valley of the Exe, which opens at this point towards the south, and is picturesquely clothed with oak coppice; the luxuriant growth of the rhododendrons in some of the woods here is a remarkable feature in the vegetation. Below Baron’s Down, in the valley of the Exe, are the ruins of Barlynch Priory, a house of Austin Canons, founded by W. Lay, temp. Henry II. and dedicated to St. Nicholas; it belonged to Cleeve Abbey, and the revenues at the Dissolution, when there were 8 canons, amounted to £98. The Earl of Carnarvon, who is lord of the manor, and Charles Bere esq. of The Lodge, Milverton, are the chief landowners. The soil is shaly and rocky; in the north-east parts is quartzose. The chief crops are oats, rape and turnips. The area of the parish is 8,893 acres of land and 26 of water; rateable value, £5,345 17s. 6d.; the population in 1891 was 682 in the civil and 688 in the ecclesiastical parish; in 1901 the population was 621.

By Local Government Board Order 15,943, a detached, part of this parish, known as Halscombe, was amalgamated with Dulverton, March 24, 1884.

National School, Brompton Regis (mixed), built in 1866, for 90 children; average attendance, 55.

National School, Bury (mixed), also used as a chapel of ease; it will hold 80 children; average attendance, 40; & is supported by the Dowager Countess of Carnarvon.
