Historical Description

BRUSHFORD is a parish and village, with a station called Dulverton on the Somerset and Devon branch of the Great Western railway, and is 2 miles south from Dulverton and 11 north from Tiverton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton, petty sessional division and union of Dulverton, county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient edifice of stone in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of three stages, built of the grey sandstone of the district, apparently in the early part of the 15th century, and containing 5 bells, presented by the Rev. John Norris, 48 years rector here, who erected the belfry stage, and died in 1746: a handsome Decorated screen divides the nave from the chancel: the south windows are good specimens of the Decorated style: there is a memorial window to Katherine Maria White, besides others, and fixed to the porch is a sundial: the square font of Purbeck stone, and probably of Norman date, was restored in 1890: in 1887—89 the tower was completely restored and the bells re-hung, the western gallery taken down, the tower arch thrown open, a ringing loft built and the porch repaired: the oak benches, dating from the 15th century, were also renewed, the total cost of the work being about £864: there are sittings for 160 persons. The parish registers date from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value, including 141 acres of glebe, £340, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Carnarvon, and held since 1858 by the Rev. Charles St. Barbe Sydenham B.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel at the extreme west end of the parish. The Earl of Carnarvon, who is lord of the manor, and Maj.-Gen. E. M. Beadon, of Charlton Horethorne, Richard Marker esq. of Combe, Honiton, Devon, and the Hon. Mark G. K. Rolle are the chief landowners. The soil is variable, principally sharp sand and clay; subsoil, shillet rock. The chief crops are barley, oats and turnips. The acreage is 2,769; rateable value, £2,369; the population in 1901 was 371.

National School (mixed), built in 1836, & enlarged in 1892, for 65 children; average attendance, 61; & has a small endowment of £7, derived from a rent-charge on land bequeathed by the Rev. John Norris.
