Historical Description

BRIMPTON (formerly Brympton D’Evercy is a small parish, 3 miles west from Yeovil station on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the Southern division of the county, Stone hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew, originally cruciform, is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: the oldest portions of the structure belongs to the Early English and Early Decoraited periods, and many remains of early ,13th century work, principally stones with incised crosses, still exist; on the north side are two chantries of the Early Decorated period, which were restored in 1893 through the munificence of the Hon. Sir S. C. B. Ponsonby-Fane G.C.B. lord of the manor. The Early Decorated transept has been incorporated with the Perpendicular aisle of the chancel, so as to form internally two chapels, the whole being then embattled, and forming apparently a continuous aisle, with a longtitudinal gabled roof: the south transept opens to the nave by a contemporary arch, and near it is another of much later date: there is a good stone rood screen of Perpendicular date, and a unique stone seat on its western side: the nave has a flat panelled ceiling: the western turret, a curious structure, is square, with two windows in each face and a pyramidal roof, and is deeply chamfered below, so as to stand on a much smaller base, rising over the west gable: there are four recumbent effigies, three of the 14th, the other of the 15th century, representing a knight, a priest and two ladies; there is also a monument of the Sydenham family, (once owners of the manor), restored in 1827; there is also a monument to Jane, Dowager Countess of Westmorland, who died March 26, 1857, and others to members of the D’Evercy family, the ancient owners, one of whom, Peter D’Evercy, founded a chantry here in 1306: the communion plate was presented by Sir Philip Sydenham bart. in 1699: the south transept was restored in 1877: there are sittings for 145 persons. The register dates from 1699, but there exists one leaf of an older register dated 1647. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £171, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Eliz. Morris. On the north side of the churchyard, but in the grounds of Brympton House, is a building called “the Chantry house,” a good example of the Decorated period, with mullioned and transomed windows, and an embattled polygonal turret at the north-east angle; it is believed to have been erected by the D’Evercys as a residence for the chantry priests of the church, but some antiquaries have contended that it formed part of the original manor house; the greater part of the lower floor is occupied by a hall with a fire-place and garderobe, and the remainder of the floor by two other chambers. Brympton House, the seat and property of the Hon. Sir Spencer Cecil Brabazon Ponsonby-Fane G.C.B., J.P. is a fine and interesting mansion of stone, the earliest portions of which date from the 15th century: the west front, erected in the reign of Henry VIII. probably by John Sydenham esq. affords, in its north wing and entrance porch, admirable specimens of Domestic Perpendicular: the north wing, which is embattled, includes on its western side a fine oriel rising through both stories, and next it, a polygonal turret in several stages; both are banded with panelled tracery, inclosing, on the former, the royal arms of Henry VIII. with lion and dragon supporters; the porch seems to have been constructed out of a former bay window: the south, or garden front, was erected in the reign of Queen Anne, but partakes of an earlier style, and Horace Walpole (“Anecdotes of Painting,” iii. 275) has suggested that it was built from the designs of Inigo Jones, which had been prepared previous to his death in 1652, but not carried out; in the clock turret on this side is a bell dated 1723: the views from the terrace walk are charmingly picturesque, and the lawns and gardens are laid out with great skill. The manor was anciently held by the D’Evercy family, and afterwards by the Stourtons, in the reign of Edward IV.; being then held by John Stourton esq. it was conveyed to the family of Sydenham by the marriage of John Sydenham esq. of Combe Sydenham, to Joan, daughter and co-heiress of John Stourton esq.; the estate was purchased of the Sydenhams by Mr. Fane in 1730, and is now the property of the Hon. Sir Spencer Cecil Brabazon Ponsonby-Fane G.C.B. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are barley and roots, but the greater part of the land is in pasture. The acreage is 576; rateable value, £1,438; the population in 1891 was 126 in the civil and 102 in the ecclesiastical parish.

The children of this place attend the Brimpton & Preston National school, in the adjoining parish of Preston.
