Historical Description
BUCKLAND ST. MARY is a parish and village, near the Taunton high road and on the confines of Devonshire, about 5 miles north-west from Chard stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways and 6 west-by-south from Ilminster, in the Bridgwater division of the county, partly in the southern division of Petherton hundred, but chiefly in the hundred of Abdick and Bulstone and partly in the hundred of Martock, Ilminster petty sessional division, Chard union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilminster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish is divided into three tithings, viz.: Buckland St. Mary, Westcombland, 2 miles west and Dommett, one mile east. The church of St. Mary, standing on an eminence and partly on the site of a former church of the time of Henry VII. is a building of flint with facings of Hamhill stone in the Middle Pointed style, from designs by the late Mr. Benjamin Ferrey, architect, of London, and was erected in the years 1853—63, chiefly at the cost of the Rev. John Edwin Lance M.A. late rector, aided by a donation of £2,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Porcher and by contributions amounting to £500 from parishioners and friends, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled tower at the south-west angle, 71 feet in height, with pyramidal roof of lead, 14 feet high, and containing 6 bells, five of which belonged to the old church and have been recast, and a tenor bell weighing 18 cwt. added; the fifth bell has an inscription and is dated 1707: the chancel has sedilia of Hamhill stone and alabaster, copied from the sedilia in the church of Isle Abbots, near Langport, and is fitted with choir stalls of oak, the fronts of which are richly carved: the reredos, of Derbyshire alabaster and Quantock marbles, has a finely carved Pieta in the centre and figures of angels at the sides, and is a memorial to the Rev. J. E. Lance M.A. rector 1830—85, erected chiefly by Miss Clara Lance: the credence, of Hamhill stone, is supported on marble shafts: the transepts are inclosed by handsome stone screens, the north transept containing an organ, erected in 1853, and presented by the Rev. W. H. Turner B.D. late rector of Trent, and the south transept serving as a vestry: the chancel screen is of alabaster arches with marble columns and capping: the roofs are massively constructed throughout of oak grown in the parish, and the hammer beams both in the nave and chancel are richly carved; below the chancel roof are figures of angels, three on each side, and below that of the nave are twelve canopied niches, containing figures of the apostles: the pulpit, of Hamhill stone and Somersetshire marbles, is adorned with niches inclosing statuettes of Our Lord and the Evangelists: the font, presented by Mr. H. Davis, of Taunton, consists of an octagonal sandstone basin, relieved on the sides by medallion heads of the evangelists and symbolical groups, and supported on clustered shafts of Somersetshire marbles and alabaster, and has a cover of old oak: there is also a brass lectern: the stained east window was presented, 1857, by Mary Turner, sister of the late rector; the west window, in part copied from one of the famous windows at Fairford, Gloucestershire, was also given in 1857 by the late Rev. W. H. Turner, and there are twelve other stained windows, some of which are memorials to the Porcher family: in the chancel is a beautiful altar tomb, with sculptured figures, to Madelina Louisa, wife of the Rev. J. E. Lance M.A. late rector, who died March 26, 1839, and is interred below with two of her children: over the porch is a carved group of the Virgin and Child, and on the western gable are the crests of the Popham and Lance families: there are sittings for 300 persons; in the churchyard is a cross of Hamhill stone, erected in 1880, with a carving of the “Crucifixion” in Caen stone at the base, and some of the tombs bear quaint epitaphs. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £236, with residence and 37 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of Frank Popham esq. of Littlecot, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Henry Lance Theol. Assoc. K.C.L. A chapel of ease was erected in 1887 at Birchwood (a short distance from Buckland), at a cost of £331, by Miss Clara M. Lance, sister of the present rector; it is a building of stone and will seat 80 persons. In the village, opposite the lych-gate of the churchyard, is a drinking fountain, erected by the late rector in 1876 at a cost of about £100. Many remains of Saxon and Danish weapons have been found here and on the Blackdown Hill. On Castile Hill is a Roman fortification called “Castle Neroche,” from whence the enchanting vale called Taunton Dene is seen to great advantage, and near it a large collection of flint stones called “Robin Hoods Rues,” probably intended as monuments of British warriors. The landowners are the trustees of the late Earl of Egremont, Mr. Walter and others. The soil is clay and flint; subsoil, day, sand and flint. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The acreage is 3,356; rateable value, £3,395; the population in 1891 was 586.
National School (mixed), erected in 1851 & enlarged in 1883, for 150 children; average attendance, 104.
