Historical Description

BURNHAM is a parish and watering-place on the coast of the Bristol Channel, forming the eastern boundary of Bridgwater Bay, into which the rivers Parret and Brue are discharged, and has a terminal station on the branch of the Somerset and Dorset railway from Evercreech junction; it is 1 ½ miles from Highbridge, 10 south-west from Axbridge, 11 south from Weston-super-Mare, 24 south-west from Bristol, 8 from Bridgwater, 20 from Taunton and 145 ½ from London, in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Bempstone, petty sessional division and union of Axbridge, county court district of Weston-super-Mare, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the town is governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members, which takes the place of a Local Board, formed March 19, 1850, and is supplied with water from a spring known as “Cox’s Well,” at Winscombe, some 8 or 9 miles distant: the works were completed in 1888, at a cost of upwards of £11,000, and are the property of the Urban Council; the late Local Board in 1889 expended between £2,000 and 3,000 in improving the drainage of the town. The climate is dry and bracing. The bathing is very good and safe, and there are excellent shops.

Under the provisions of section one, sub-section three, of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the civil parish of Burnham has been divided into the parishes of Burnham and Burnham Without.

The church of St. Andrew, standing near the sea-shore, is an ancient building of stone, 140 feet in length, in the Transition style from Decorated to Perpendicular, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and a massive western tower containing a clock and 6 bells; owing to the subsidence of the sandy soil the foundation of the tower has somewhat given way and is considerably out of the perpendicular: the chancel contains a magnificent altar-piece, the work of Inigo Jones, removed from Westminster Abbey and presented to the parish by Dr. Walker King, a former vicar, who was bishop of Rochester 1809—27: the stained east window was erected in 1875, and the west window in 1878, by Mrs. Cox, as a memorial to her brother, and there are other memorial windows: the font, of various marbles, was presented in 1883 by Dr. Board, of Clifton: in the tower is a stone tablet, inscribed to Austin Bord, d. 26 Nov. 1598: the chancel was restored in 1875, and the nave and north aisle in 1878—9; other improvements have since been made, and the whole cost of restoration, &c. has amounted to about £4,000: there, are sittings for 820 persons. The register dates from the year 1630. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £340, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1867 by the Rev. Theodore Crane Dupuis M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, prebendary of Wells and surrogate. The Baptist chapel, in College street, erected in 1843, is an edifice of brick with stone facings, and seating 300 persons. The Wesleyan chapel, in College street, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1880 and has 250 sittings. A cemetery of 1 ½ acres, on the Berrow road, was formed in 1885, at a cost of £1,800, and is under the control of a joint committee of 8 members, chosen from the Urban District Council and the Parish Council of Burnham Without. The Catholic church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, erected in 1889—90 at a cost of £1,500, and consecrated by the late Bishop Clifford, 3 July, 1890, is an edifice in the Gothic style, and will seat 250 persons: adjoining is the Convent of the “Retreat of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” a brick building, commonly called “The Rookery,” and including a school. There are some small endowed charities for the poor, amounting all to about £8; this parish has also a small share of Rogers’s charity. Burnham is much exposed to north-westerly winds, which sweep over the Bristol Channel with great fury, and do much damage to vegetation as well as to buildings. The beach is extensive and sandy, and when the tide has ebbed is nearly half a mile in breadth; horse races are held yearly, in July, in a field near the lighthouse. High sand ridges form embankments next to the land, and protect the neighbourhood from the highest tides. Towards the south end of the beach is a pier, 900 feet long, with accommodation for shipping, pleasure boats &c. Steamers ply during the summer months to Ilfracombe, Minehead, Watchet, Cardiff and round the rocky islands known as the “Steep Holme” and “Flat Holme.” The early closing day is on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. for all establishments except butchers’, which is 5 p.m. There are plenty of good lodgings to be had both here and at Berrow, and the residents are often willing during the summer to let their houses furnished. Steart Island, about a mile from the shore, is much resorted to for picnics, and during the season capital sea fowl shooting is to be had, large numbers of wild duck, widgeon, wild geese &c. frequenting it. The Market-house and Town Hall, in Princess street, belongs to and is under the management of the Urban District Council, whose offices are here, and the hall is licensed for theatrical performances, and will hold 600 persons. The Burnham Institute Limited, in Regent street, built in 1892 at a cost of £1,200, and formerly the property of trustees, now belongs to a limited liability company. It is a building of stone in the Gothic style and contains a lofty reading room, well supplied with the London and other papers and magazines, a billiard room with two, tables, and lavatories &c. Visitors are admitted at a small weekly payment; R. P. Dawbin, secretary. Messrs. Stuckey and Co. Limited and the Wilts and Dorset Bank have branch banks here. The Queen’s hotel, at the head of the pier, and the Royal Clarence, in the centre of the esplanade, are the principal hotels; both command fine views of the bay and the Quantock hills. Hart House school, at The Grove, is pleasantly situated in its own grounds of 8 ½ acres; the school will hold about 40 boarders; the Rev. J. Thompson and H. J. K. Thompson M.A. are the principals. Ellen’s cottages, on the Berrow road, near the high lighthouse, were erected and endowed in 1868, by John Saunders esq. of Burnham, in memory of his wife, and furnish residences for 10 poor women. There is a lofty lighthouse on the Berrow road, erected to warn seamen of the danger of the Gore sands; its height is 120 feet. It is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until one hour before sunset to the public, and from its summit a magnificent view is obtained, and on the sands is a smaller one on wooden piles. Here is a station of the Royal National Life Boat Institution, managed by a committee of gentlemen of the neighbourhood; William Stoate, Burnham, secretary; the life boat is named “The John Godfrey Morris”; Alfred Hunt, chief coxswain. The golf links are about 1 mile from Burnham railway station and 1 ½ from Brent Knoll station, and comprise two grounds, one for ladies and another for gentlemen; the former has a full course of 18 holes, and two miles in extent, the intervals varying from 113 to 267 yards; croquet and lawn tennis may also be played, and there are two pavilions; Arthur Greswell, 2 The Colony, hon. sec. The gentlemen’s links have also, a full course of 18 holes, and a good club house; T. Holt esq. The Hall, Burnham, hon. sec. Burnham Hall, an, attractive residence, prettily situated on the Berrow road, is the residence of Thomas Holt esq. and was built by Mrs. King, wife of the Right Rev. Dr. Walker King, bishop of Rochester 1809—27. In the parish are three manors; one belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Wells, the others to the trustees of the late John Board esq. and Mrs. Rocke. The area of Burnham is 797 acres, a portion of Burnham Without having been incorporated in the Urban District of Burnham; rateable value, £13,386; the population in 1891 was 2,360, and in 1901 it was 2,897. Burnham Without is a separate parish, rateable value, £8,196.
