Historical Description

BURRINGTON is a parish and village, pleasantly situated on a northern slope of the Mendip Hills, 4 miles east from Sandford and Banwell station on the Great Western railway and 5 ½ north-east from Axbridge, in the Wells division of the county, Brent-with-Wrington hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The Wrington Vale Light railway, now (1901) in course of construction, from Congresbury to Blagdon, passes through the parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: there is a large brass to Col. John Jones, who was the owner of, and in 1737 resided at, Langford Court, his wife and six of his family: in the chancel is a mural tablet to Albina, wife of W. H. Jackson esq. of the Hon. East India Company’s service, who was drowned in the India-man, “Elizabeth,” in 1810; the beautiful epitaph was written by Hannah Moore: several of the windows are stained, some being memorials to members of the Somers family: there is a carved oak screen and side screens separating the chancel from the choir; the altar table was given by William Long esq. J.P. of West Hay, in 1884: the church was restored in 1856 and again in 1884, at a cost of £1,465, and has sittings for 325 persons. The register dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £119, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the parishioners, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Reginald Henry Edwards B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There are charities of £6. Burrington Combe presents scenery of romantic character, similar in its general features to Cheddar Cliffs, but of less magnitude, although the rocks in one part rise to a perpendicular height of 250 feet, with a bold rugged front: the Combe is remarkable for four curious natural caverns, the lowest of which, probably an ancient catacomb, and known as “Aveline’s Hole,” was accidentally discovered in 1795, but not fully explored till 1820, when it was found to contain bones of various animals, and far inwards fifty human skeletons, placed regularly with their heads close under the north side of the rock; near these were discovered flint knives and tesserae; two other of these caves are called “Whitcomb’s Hole,” and “Plumley’s Den,” and in the fourth, “Goatchurch,” are stalagmites and water; this cavern is of considerable size and depth, the lowest part being 220 feet below the entrance. In January of the year 1875, some workmen, while quarrying the rocks, discovered an opening of great depth, and a villager, while attempting to explore it, lost his life. To the east of the village is a picturesque glen, called “Rickford,” nearly surrounded by wooded and rocky heights: here, on the side of the Mendip Hills, rises a beautiful spring, forming a rapid stream, which, on leaving Rickford, gives its Saxon name “burn ’’ or “bourne,” to the land past which it flows at this point; it thence winds its way through the vale to Wrington, when it joins the river Yeo, which falls into the Bristol Channel, James Thornton Gibson esq. of Havyet Lodge, who is lord of the manor; Lt.-Col. Evan Henry Llewellyn M.P. of Langford Court; Benjamin Edward Somers esq. of Mendip Lodge; Alfred C. Pass esq. of Wootton Fitzpaine, Dorset; J. Wise esq. of Whiteladies, Clifton; Augustus Fear esq. and John H. Spreat esq. of Bourn, are chief landowners. The subsoil is lime and gravel. The chief crops are corn, roots, apples and hay. The acreage is 2,000 (977 acres cultivated and 1,033 uncultivated); rateable value, £2,351; the population in 1901 was 417.

National School (mixed), for 120 children; average attendance, 86.
