Historical Description

BUTLEIGH is a parish and village on the river Brue, 4 miles south from Glastonbury station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, and 10 south from Wells in the Eastern division of the county, Whitley hundred, Glastonbury petty sessional division, Wells union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Leonard is a building of stone in the Decorated style, restored and enlarged by the addition of transepts in 1851, and further enlarged by the erection of a north aisle in 1859: it now consists of chancel with aisles, nave of two bays, north aisle, transepts, south porch and a central embattled tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel windows are original, but the east wall has been rebuilt, and the roof and internal architectural features of the chancel, as well as the fittings, are modern: the nave windows belong to the 14th century; that at the west end, retaining some ancient glass, is Late Perpendicular: the font, also of this period, exhibits the Agnus Dei, and the Pelican in her piety: at the east end of the nave is an aumbry: there are a few benches of early date, from which the modern benches have been copied: there are sittings for 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1578. The living is a vicarage, formerly held with Baltonsborough, but erected into a separate benefice in 1895, net yearly value £250, including 50 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of Robert Neville Grenville esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. George William Berkeley. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1883, and seating 150 persons. The charities are of £25 yearly value. Sir George Bowles’s hospital is a building of stone, erected, with residence for the surgeon, in 1882, at a cost of £5,000; in 1900 the number of indoor patients treated was 49; out-patients are also treated. Here are blue lias quarries. Robert Neville-Grenville esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. of Butleigh Court, who is the lord of the manor, and Capt. Sir Alexander Fuller-Acland Hood bart. M.P. of St. Audries, West Quantoxhead, are chief landowners. The soil is clayey and the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, beans and roots. The area is 3,922 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £5,220; the population in 1891 was 772 in the civil and 782 in the ecclesiastical parish; and in 1901, 687 civil and 697 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 15,665 a part of this parish known as King’s Sedgmoor was transferred to Walton, March 25th, 1885.
