Historical Description

CAMELEY (including Temple Cloud) is a parish, 1 ½ miles south-west from Clutton station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 11 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chewton, union of Clutton, petty sessional division and county court district of Temple Cloud, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. This place takes its name from the Cam brook, which flows through the parish. The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register of baptisms dates from 1592; marriages and burials, 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £265, including 98 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of R. J. B. Hippisley esq. and held since 1878 by the Rev. William Hippisley, of Magdalen College, Oxford. There are charities of £15 yearly for blankets and clothing. Excellent building stone is found here. Richard John Bayntun Hippisley esq. of Ston Easton Park, who is lord of the manor, and William Rees-Mogg esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hay and roots, but a great portion is pasture land. The area is 1,633 acres; rateable value, £2,529; the population in 1891 was 465.

National School, erected in 1861, for 100 children; average attendance, 93, & endowed with £6 yearly.
