Historical Description

Camerton, near the Fosse-road, six miles from Bath. That part of it which was in ancient times principally inhabited was its western and south-western extremity. Near the fosse have been found some large bones, and part of a tessellated pavement.

The church is a handsome Gothic structure, containing several curious tombs.

Mr. Collinson describes the Church-yard as one of the prettiest in the kingdom, rendered so by the proprietor of a neighbouring mansion: the tombs are almost hid by laurels, arbor-vitaes, and roses; the walls of the church are covered with ivy and pyracanthas.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CAMERTON is a parish and village, with a terminal station of the Camerton branch of the Great Western railway from Hallatrow Junction, 3 ¾ miles in length, and opened for traffic on March 1, 1882; it is also 2 miles north from Radstock, 10 from Frome and 7 southwest from Bath, and is in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Clutton union, Temple Cloud county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone, partly in the Early English style, but the tower and part of the nave belong probably to the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century; it consists of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower in the Late Perpendicular style, with four pinnacles and containing 5 bells: in the north chapel are two large tombs, dated respectively 1640 and 1686, and other memorials to the Carew family, and on a shield on the exterior wall is the date 1638: the chapel, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, belonged to the Carews, but has passed to the Jarrett family, to whom there are four stained windows, placed in 1864 and 1900, and several mural tablets: the stained east window was given by the family of the Rev. Edward Holland, late rector (1851—91), to whose memory also the brass lectern was presented by the parishioners, the organ was given by the late Miss Jarrett, to whom a memorial window has since been erected: the church was enlarged in 1848, and in 1891 was almost entirely rebuilt by Miss Jarrett at a cost of nearly £4,000: the modern transept was removed and a new chancel built, with stone sedilia and a credence and a coved panelled roof, with carved bosses: the nave was extended in length as far as the east end of the former church, new oak screens placed in the chancel and south aisle, and the interior completely re-seated: there are 300 sittings: on the north side of the churchyard is a tomb with a semi-recumbent female figure. The register dates from 1684. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £360, including 41 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss Jarrett, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Arthur May Dewing M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. At Mead Gate is an iron church mission and club room. There are two Wesleyan chapels in the parish. Here is a colliery with two shafts, the property of Miss Jarrett, and in full work. A Roman fosseway passes along the edge of the parish, on the south-west. Woodborough House, a handsome mansion standing in a park one mile and a half east, is now in the occupation of Frank B, Beauchamp esq.; Camerton Court, a fine mansion built by the late John Jarrett esq. is the residence of Miss Jarrett, the lady of the manor and chief landowner; the house stands upon high ground in 11 acres of garden, surrounded by a park 100 acres in extent, and commands some extensive and picturesque views. The soil is clayey; subsoil is various, the greater portion being the colite and lias stone. The land is principally in pasturage for dairy purposes. The area, including Peasedown, is 1,769 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £6,362; the population in 1891 was 1,877 in the civil and 866 in the ecclesiastical parish, and in 1896, 960 in the latter.
