Historical Description

CARHAMPTON is a parish and village, about one mile from the coast of the Bristol Channel and on the road from Williton to Minehead, 2 miles south-east from Dunster station, 1 south-west from Blue Anchor station on the West Somerset and Minehead branch of the Great Western railway, and 5 west by north from Williton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Carhampton, Dunster petty sessional division, union and county court district of Williton, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. This place gave the title of Earl and Viscount to the Luttrell family, but both became extinct on the death of John, 3rd Earl, 17 March, 1869. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, double nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: a very handsome screen divides the nave from the chancel, and there is a tablet to Sarah Trevelyan, of Knoll, ob, 1667: the church was restored in 1862—3, the whole of the north wall being rebuilt and vestry added, and the interior re-seated, chiefly at the cost of the Luttrell family, of Dunster Castle: the tower was rebuilt in 1870—1 by the late Miss Luttrell, of Dunster Castle, and 2 bells added by the Rev. Thomas Fownes Luttrell, a former vicar: an organ was placed in the church in 1866: there are sittings for 270 persons. The registers date from 1634, but those between 1652 and 1675 are lost. The living is a vicarage, with Rodhuish chapel, net yearly value £200, with residence and two acres of glebe, in the gift of G. Fownes-Luttrell esq. of Dunster Castle, and held since 1872 by the Rev. William Philip Michell B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A vicarage house was erected in 1875, the funds being supplied from Queen Anne’s Bounty. There as a small Wesleyan chapel, erected about 1830, with day school adjoining. Hole’s charity of £13 9s. 6d. yearly is for blankets, and Escott’s charity of £10 yearly is partly for the support of a Sunday school at the hamlet of Rodhuish, and partly for the poor. At Bowerhayes, in this parish, are the kennels of the West Somerset fox hounds. Dunster, Minehead, Bridgwater and Williton are convenient places for hunting visitors. Marshwood, an ancient structure at Carhampton Lower Side, and now occupied as a farmhouse, has some curious figures over the entrance. George Fownes-Luttrell esq. of Dunster Castle, is lord of the manor and the chief landowner. The soil is loamy, clayey, and a tight, close, heavy soil, calculated for wheat and beans; and the subsoil is various. The crops are mostly wheat, barley, beans and excellent mangold and other roots. The area is 2,783 acres of land and 5 of water, and 576 of tidal foreshore; rateable value, £4,387; the population in 1901 was 371 in the civil parish and 612 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

Rodhuish, a detached part of this parish, was by Local Government Board Order 14,599 amalgamated with Withycombe, March 25, 1884, for civil purposes; names for this place are given with Withycombe. The Church of England chapel here, attached to and served from the parish church, will seat 100 persons. By Local Government Board Order 14,601 Beasley, Combe and Croydon were annexed to Timbersombe, March 25, 1884.

National (mixed), erected in 1869 & enlarged in 1898, for 60 children; average attendance, 54.

Wesleyan (mixed & infants), for 40 children; average attendance, 20.
