Historical Description

Castle-Cary, in the hundred of Catash, is an ancient market- town, about nine miles eastward from Ilchester, and twelve miles S. E. from Wells. From its primitive appellation, Caer, it was probably a fortified place in the time of the Saxons. The Castle was nearly ruined during the civil wars, in King Stephen’s reign, and from that period no farther mention is made of it in history; so that the spot whereon it stood is at present hardly known to the inhabitants of the town, being marked only by an entrenched area of about two acres, called the Camp, in which implements of war, and bolts of iron, have been frequently dug up.

Castle-Cary has a charter for holding a market on Tuesdays; but it has long been discontinued, except occasionally from Allhallow-tide to Easter.

The Church is not large, but of a very pleasing appearance, from its situation on an eminence, and the care that is taken to preserve and keep it in repair. —It consists of a nave, chancel, and side-aisles, covered with lead, with an embattled tower and spire.

The beauty of the surrounding country, the respectability of the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood, and its many advantages of situation, unite to render Castle-Cary interesting to the traveller, particularly if in pursuit of an agreeable place of retirement.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CASTLE CARY is a market town and parish, near the source of the river Cary, with a station on the Dorchester and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 130 miles from London, 3 south from Evercreech Junction on the Somerset and Dorset railway, and 6 northwest from Wincanton; a branch line is now (1901) in course of construction by the Great Western Railway Co. from Castle Cary to Langport via Somerton, which will reduce the distance from Paddington to Exeter by 26 miles; it is in the Eastern division of the county, Catsash hundred, Wincanton union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Cary, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish is divided into North and South Cary, with the hamlets of Clanville and Blackworthy, and the tithings of Dimmer and Cockhill. The river Cary, which rises here, gives name to Babcary, Lytes Cary and Cary Fitzpaine. The town is paved and efficiently drained, and is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1854, and is well supplied with water from springs situated in various parts of the town; in 1893 new outfall and sewage disposal works were constructed at a cost of over £3,000; the Parish Council have now the control of the sewage works and other matters. The church of All Saints, situated on a hill, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular or in the Third-Pointed style, and was enlarged and nearly rebuilt in 1855, at a cost of £3,000; it consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and lofty octagonal spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: the east window and four others are stained: part of the finely carved rood-screen has been restored, and now incloses the vestry: there is also a carved pulpit and a very good font of the early 15th century; an organ chamber was built in 1891, at a cost of £300, and a new organ, was then presented by John Stephens Donne, as a memorial to the late T. S. Donne and Harriet, his wife. The church affords 750 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £217, with 13 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Augustus William Grafton M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, prebendary of Wells, rural dean of Cary and surrogate. Sir Henry H. A. Hoare bart. of Stourhead, is the lay impropriator of the rectorial tithes, amounting to £301 yearly. Here are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. The Burial Acts were adopted at a parish meeting held in February, 1897, when it was decided to provide a burial ground for the parish, and the Parish Council have the control of the cemetery. The Town Hall, in the Market place, is a substantial building of stone, with a clock tower; the Castle Cary Billiard Club occupies rooms here, and there is also a large room used for entertainments during the winter season, and holding 300 persons. The Castle Cary Constitutional Club was established 7 Feb. 1896; the premises, opened 14 April in the same year by the Earl of Selborne, contain reading, billiard, card and writing rooms, caretaker’s house and offices. The Boyd Institute, opened in 1885, is used for lectures and meetings. There are also two subscription reading rooms in the town. The town has two manufactories for horsehair seating and brush drafts, one for twine and another for making Pasteurised butter. A corn and cattle market is held every alternate Tuesday, and a repository sale is held on the same day: fairs are held on the Tuesday before Palm Sunday, 1st of May, Whit Tuesday and 1st Tuesday after 19th of September. The East Somerset Agricultural Society, jointly with Bruton and Wincanton, hold a show on the last Thursday in August for horses, cattle, roots, cheese, butter, poultry and pigeons every third year. Early closing day is Thursday, 3 p.m. The charities amount to about £16 yearly. In 1887 ten cottages were erected by John Boyd esq. for the aged poor of this parish; these have gardens attached, and the inmates occupy them rent free, and have an allowance of 6s. per week under the same trust. The Castle Cary Convalescent Fund was founded in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, and is expended in sending persons to convalescent homes and sanatoriums; W. S. Donne, hon. treasurer; R. B. Drewett, hon. sec. The old roundhouse, formerly used as a lock-up, still stands in the centre of the Market place, Bailey hill. On the northeast side of the town, at the base of Lodge hill, is a field called “The Paddock,” in which is the site of a castle from which the town derives the first part of its name. The exact position of this fortress was discovered in 1890, on the occasion of the visit of the Somerset Archaeological Society to the town. The foundations then exposed were those of a very large keep of about 80 feet square, with walls 15 feet in thickness, and their exact position is now marked by four square pillars. Near the site rises the little river Cary. Alfreds Tower and Glastonbury Tor are conspicuous objects from this place. Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare bart. of Stourhead House, is lord of the manor. John Stephens Donne esq. J.P., William Stephens Donne esq., Thomas Salisbury Donne esq., Thomas GouId esq., William Thomas Carey Dickinson esq. of Kingweston House, Capt. C. H. Pretor, of St. Buryan, and the Messrs Robert Henry and George Augustus White are the chief landowners. The hills which adjoin the town are of the geological formation called the “inferior colite.” The soil is of a light sandy nature, and very good. The area is 2,492 acres; assessable value, £8,343; the population in 1901 was 1,904.

A School Board of five members was formed July 12th 1889; Richard Blackway Drewett, Park mount, clerk, to the board.

Board (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1876, for 380 children; average attendance, 126 boys, 118 girls & 106 infants.
