The church of St. Michael is an ancient building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, two of which are dated 1611 and 1731 respectively; the third being a pre-Reformation bell, with the invocation “Sancte Petre ora pro nobis”: the stained east window and the reredos are memorials to the Rev. C. H. Norwood M.A. late vicar, 1879—88, erected by his widow, Mrs. C. H. Norwood: the font of stone is of early date: the church was restored in 1859 at a cost of £820, and in 1881 the tower was partly rebuilt and the bells rehung at a cost of £340, exclusive of the timber, given by Earl Poulett: there are 125 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1678; marriages 1682. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £100 (but subject to a payment of £34 to Queen Anne's Bounty), including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Earl Poulett (d. 1899), and held since 1894 by the Rev. Henry Newton Dymond M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The rectory house, of stone, was built in 1886 at a cost of over £1,000, and is prettily situated near the church. Avishays House is the residence of Henry Haslope Bagnall. The trustees of the late Earl Poulett (d. 1899) are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is stony; subsoil, stone and clay. The crops are chiefly wheat, barley, seeds and some land in pasture. The area is 969 acres; rateable value, £1,204; the population in 1891 was 192.
