Historical Description

CHARLCOMBE is a parish, nearly 2 miles north from Bath station on the Great Western railway, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Hampton and Claverton, Weston petty sessional division, union and county court district of Bath, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a small but ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: five of the windows are stained, and there is a carved stone reredos and an ancient font: the church affords sittings for 100 persons. The register dates from the year 1759. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £320, including 9 acres of glebe, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. William Frederick Kelly. The Charlcombe waterworks of the city of Bath are in this parish. The soil is brashy; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 769 acres; rateable value, £6,601; the population in 1901 was 775.

By Local Government Board Order 18,114, March 25, 1885, two detached parts of Walcot were added to this parish.

The children of this parish attend the school at Larkhall.
