Historical Description

CHEDDAR is a large village and scattered parish on the Cheddar Water, with a station on the Cheddar valley branch of the Great Westem railway and is 2 ½ miles east-south-east from Axbridge, 21 ½ south-west from Bristol by rail and 19 by road, and 142 from London, in the Wells division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells' and diocese of Bath and Wells. Cheddar Water is a stream which rises in the Mendip hills and, passing under the cliffs, reappears at the mouth of a cavern, and ultimately joins the Axe. The situation of Cheddar is exceedingly fine, from the contrast between the lofty brow of the cliffs on one side and the extensive level on the other. The continuous flat called “Cheddar Moor ’’ was, until the early part of the century, studded over with British tumuli, or barrows, but the plough has entirely levelled them. This parish extends from the middle of the summit of Mendip for a long distance into the moors, and the scenery is agreeably varied and diversified. The village consists of four or five irregular streets, and is lighted with gas supplied by a company. The church of St. Andrew is a stately building of local stone in the Gothic style of the 13th and 14th centuries, consisting of chancel with lateral chapels, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, large north and south porches, the FitzWalter chapel east of the south porch, and a noble western tower, 100 feet high, with double buttresses, terminating in pinnacles and a pierced parapet, and containing a clock and 6 bells, the latest being added in 1884: the exterior of the nave and aisles is also adorned with buttresses and pierced parapets of similar character: many of the windows are, partially filled with stained glass, the arms of the Cheddar family being conspicuously displayed: in the chancel, beneath a richly sculptured arch, surrounded by shields of arms, is an altar tomb, with brass effigy in armour, of Sir Thomas de Cheddar, c. 1443; on a slab near thereto is a figure, in brass, of Isabella, his widow, c. 1476; the inscriptions in both cases are lost: the church was thoroughly restored in 1873, at a cost of £3,870: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £202, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Frederick Arthur Clarke M.A. & Fellow of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1897, at a cost of nearly £3,000, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, from designs by Messrs. Foster and Wood, architects of Bristol, and will seat 350 persons. There is also a Baptist chapel and a meeting room for the Plymouth Brethren. The Church House was built in 1804, chiefly by public subscription, but a part, consisting of two rooms, was erected at the cost of Miss C. a C. Beadon in memory of her father, the Rev. Richard a Court Beadon, for 47 years vicar of Cheddar, it is used as a Sunday school, and for church meetings. Considerable quantities of the well-known “Cheddar” cheese are made in this neighbourhood. Formerly a considerable market was held, but this has now been long discontinued. The old hexagonal market cross is still standing and was thoroughly restored in 1887—8, at a cost of over £60. Fairs for the sale of stock are held yearly on the 1st Tuesday in May and on the last Tuesday in October. Early Closing day is Wednesday. St. Michael’s Home for consumptive patients, being members of the Church of England, has 24 beds for men and 17 for women; the admission is free; patients are admitted at first for two months only; but in urgent cases they may remain longer. The House is under the management of trustees, and is worked by the Sisters of St. Peter’s, Kilburn, and has a private chapel attached. The charities are of £180 yearly value, of which Wintle’s of £9 was founded by will in 1867 and Symons’s by deed in 1869, the aggregate sum is expended in education and in gifts of blankets and sheets to decayed housekeepers, as well as in apprenticing both boys and girls.

The chasm called Cheddar Cliffs, is one of the most remarkable objects of its kind in England, and has been treated of at some length by Colliuson, the historian of the county, who described the chasm forming these cliffs as “running across the south-west ridge of the hill from top to bottom, extending in a north-east winding direction more than a mile in length, and then branching off by two passages in the form of the capital letter Y by an easy ascent to the top of the Mendip. Proceeding up this winding passage, the cliffs rise on either hand in the most picturesque forms, some of them being near 800 feet high, terminating in craggy pyramids. On the right several of them are perpendicular to the height of 400 feet, resembling the shattered battlements of vast castles. On the left hand, or west side, are two especially of this form, which lean over the roads beneath with the most threatening aspect, while the tops of many others project over with grandeur. To add to the sublimity of this scene, it should be stated that the projections on the one side stand opposed to corresponding hollows on the other, which is a strong indication that this immense gap has been formed by a dreadful and sudden convulsion of the earth.” At the foot of the cliffs within this chasm are numerous cottages surrounding a rock-girt lake formed by the Cheddar water, and discharging itself by a waterfall at the lower end. The approach to this scene from the village is extremely picturesque. The stalactite cavern, accidentally discovered by Mr. Cox in 1837, has one main porch, and three or four lateral branches, which are narrow fissures, about 10 or 12 feet broad and some 30 or 40 feet high, completely incrusted with fantastic masses of stalactite. Mr. Cox also met with another cave in 1887, now known as “Fairy Grotto.’’ A third cave, opposite the “lion rock,” discovered in 1877 by Mr. Gough, is rich in the wonders which distinguish these cliffs and contains fossil remains of animals, birds &c.; three additional chambers of large size covered with stalactites and stalagmites of dazzling whiteness and beauty, were opened by Mr. Gough in 1888, and in April, 1893, a further magnificent cave was discovered by Mr. Gough, who had been engaged for two years in excavating the debris of what appeared to be an old water course, which had become tilled up almost to the roof with clay and sand. After proceeding 200 or 300 yards and finding several lateral chambers, the passage seemed to abruptly terminate, but on excavating the floor a small opening was found and with great difficulty passage worked which led to the discovery of a cavern extending in an east-south-easterly direction for about 800 yards, with various other chambers on each side and at some points of great height and width. In November, 1898, Mr. Gough met with another cave of lofty dimensions and about 60 feet in width, the stalactites and stalagmites in which appearing in one part like a sea of dazzling whiteness, in others like muslin draperies and festoons: in a further chamber are many more of great size and varied colours: the electric light has been installed throughout the caves. Ruins of a small chapel are to be seen near the manor farm house. The Marquess of Bath is lord of the entire manor, which was a royal demesne until the reign of King John, when it was granted, with that of Axbridge and other possessions, to Hugh de Welles, and remained attached to the see of Wells until temp. Edward VI. when it was exchanged for other lands by the then bishop of the see. The Marquess of Bath, Capt. Thomas Gilling Gilling and Lady Annaly are the chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, coarse gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans, early peas, potatoes and strawberries. The area is 7,001 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £15,476; the population in 1891 was 1,941 and in 1901, 1,975. A small portion of this parish was transferred to Axbridge in August, 1897.

British (mixed), erected in 1871, for 280 children; average attendance, 170.

National (mixed), built in 1834, & enlarged in 1887, for 250 children, & endowed with £45 yearly; average attendance, 120.
