Historical Description

CHEW MAGNA (formerly known as Bishop’s Chew) is a village and extensive parish, 3 miles west from Pensford station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 7 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chew, Clutton union, petty sessional division and county court district of Temple Cloud, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Chew runs through the parish. The church of St. Andrew, built at different periods and restored in 1860, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with on either side a mortuary chapel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches, and a western tower, with pierced parapet and pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the font is Norman: a carved and richly illuminated screen divides the chancel from the nave: in the north, or Strachey, chapel, is a monument to Sir John St. Loe: the chapel on the south side is known as the Baber chapel, and contains a monument to that family: there is a piscina in the south wall of the church, where also, under a modern canopy, is a painted effigy in oak of a knight of the De Hautville family; there are also brasses and tablets to the Jones and Abraham families: the church affords sittings for 600 persons: in the churchyard are the remains of an ancient cross, consisting of the shaft raised on a, base of six steps and standing altogether about 18 feet high. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £550, including 120 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the Rev. E. A. Ommanney, vicar from 1841—78, and held since 1878 by the Rev. John Galbraith M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and surrogate. The church house, on the south side of the churchyard, is a curious old building with a fine timber roof, and has on the front the arms of the St. Loe family; here the Courts Leet and Baron for the hundred and manors of Chew were formerly held; it was conveyed by the Guardians of the Clutton Union to the vicar, churchwardens and overseers, to be used for school purposes only, but is now void. The charities amount to £35 yearly. The North East Somerset Farmers’ Club, the meetings of which are held at the Pelican inn here, has for its object the promotion of agriculture; an exhibition of live stock and dairy produce is held annually, at which prizes are given. Sutton Court, the mansion of Sir Edward Strachey bart. and formerly in this parish, together with the tithing of Knighton Sutton, was by the Divided Parishes Act transferred in 1883 to the parish of Stowey. Chew Magna Manor House, the residence of William Adlam esq. D.L., J.P., F.S.A, was built about 1656, on the foundations of an earlier house, by Robert Vickris esq. an ancestor of Mrs. Adlam, and restored in 1864 by W. Adlam esq. under the direction of Mr. John Norton, architect, of London; the house contains some fine portraits of members of the Vickris family, and the chief rooms have mantelpieces and panelled ceilings of carved oak, some of which date from the years 1651 and 1656: Chew Court, now (1901) unoccupied, is part of a mansion erected at an early date; attached to it is a gateway of the Tudor period, with a solar over, having a good timber roof. Highfields, the residence of Frederick Augustus Wood esq. J.P. is picturesquely seated on high ground overlooking the village and commands lovely views of the country towards Bath and the Mendip hills. William Adlam esq., of the Manor house; the Charity Trustees of Bristol; Miss Colthurst, who is lady of the manor and George Walters Daubeney esq. of Westbury-on-Trym, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy sand; the subsoil is red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The land is chiefly pasture, but partly arable. Excellent dairy farms are in this parish. The area is 4,598 acres of land and 25 of water; rateable value, £10,432; the population in 1891 was 1,481 of the whole parish; and of Chew Magna, not including Bishop Sutton, 985.

By Local Government Board Older 15,678, Mar. 24, 1884, a part of Stowey parish, known as Wright’s, was transferred to Chew Magna, and a part of Knighton Sutton hamlet added to the former from the latter parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed, October 13, 1874; W. E. Milton, clerk to the board.

Board School, Chew Magna (mixed), erected 1895, for 200 children; average attendance, 165.
