Historical Description

CHEW STOKE is a parish and small village, about 4 ½ miles west-south-west from Pensford station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and 9 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chew, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew is a fine building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and containing 6 bells: the church was restored in 1862, and in 1887 an organ was erected at a cost of £225 raised by subscription: in 1900 the building was again restored, when the tower, nave, roofs and walls were thoroughly restored: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1672. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £155, including 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees of Rev. R. V. S. Penfold, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Robert Vowler Saxby Penfold. A Parish Hall has been erected by the present rector, at a cost of £350, for the use of the parishioners. The old rectory house, dating from 1529, still exists. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. The principal charities amount to about £35 a year, which sum is laid out in blankets for the poor of the parish and distributed on Old Christmas Day: there are smaller charities, producing £12 yearly. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clayey. The land is principally in pasture. The area is 2,157 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £5,432; the population in 1891 was 653.

National School (mixed), rebuilt with master's house, in 1857, for 130 children; average attendance, 99, & endowed with £80 yearly.
