Historical Description

CHEWTON MENDIP is a village and extensive parish, seated among the Mendip Hills, and on the high road from Bristol to Wells, 3 miles north-west from Binegar station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 15 miles south from Bristol and 5 north-east from Wells, in the Northern division of the county, Cherwton hundred, Temple Cloud petty sessional division, Wells union (except the hamlet of North Widcombe) and county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Chew takes its rise in this village, and the Bristol Water Works Company obtain their water from the springs in this parish and intervening tributary springs in its course. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, restored in 1890—91 at a cost of upwards of £1,000, with elegant pinnacles and containing a clock, presented in 1876 by the late Frances Countess Waldegrave, and 6 bells: the north doorway has a fine Norman arch, and there is other Norman work in the buttresses, mouldings and ornaments of the fabric: the west front retains canopied niches for statues, some of which remain: in the chancel are three stone sedilia of the 15th century, and two piscinae, one of the 14th and the other of the 15th century; in the south chapel is an altar-tomb of the 15th century, with recumbent figures, said to represent Sir Henry FitzRoger and Elizabeth, his wife, but assigned by Camden to William, 1st Baron Bonville (who, after the second battle of St. Albans, 17 Feb. 1460—1, was executed) and Elizabeth (FitzRoger), his wife: a tablet and a stained window in the south chapel were erected in 1880 by Lord Carlingford, in memory of his wife, Frances, Countess Waldegrave, who died 5 July, 1879, and is buried in the churchyard: the communion plate includes a short but elegant chalice of silver-gilt, of early date, with foliage work round the bowl and at the base of the stem, and a paten of the same material, in the centre of which, within a ribbon, in the Agnus Dei, and the interior rim is cusped: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Emborrow annexed, joint net yearly value £185, with residence and one acre of glebe, in the gift of and held by the Rev. Charles Young M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Lead formerly abounded in this parish; the mines are not now worked: there are stone quarries, excellent building stone and marl being found here. The charities, consisting of the rent of Chew Down, containing about 13 acres, and the rent of lands at Ashcott, consisting of 14 acres, present value £30, are appropriated to the support of the National school. Ashcott lands were purchased in 1811 by a legacy of John Dory, gentleman, who died in 1765, and produce £10 yearly. Chew Down, formerly an open common, is now inclosed, and produces an annual rental of £20. Chewton Priory, the seat of the Earl Waldegrave P.C., J.P., V.D. is a modern building in the Tudor style. Chewton House is the seat of the Hon. Mrs. Boyle. Earl Waldegrave is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light, with a subsoil of limestone; the land is chiefly devoted to grazing. The acreage is 5,721; rateable value, £7,672; the population in 1891 was 687 in the civil and 766 in the ecclesiastical parish; 1901, civil parish 631.

By Local Government Board Order 15,684 a detached part of Chewton Mendip parish, including Hazel farm, was March 24, 1884, transferred to Compton, and a detached part of Emborough added to Chewton Mendip by Order 18,163, March 25, 1885.
