Historical Description

Chilcompton is a small parish, about three miles from Embrow, situated partly on the turnpike-road, and partly in a rich woody vale, which extends northward to Midsummer Norton. At the head of the valley, near some romantic and wild rocks, several springs arise, forming, at a little distance from their source, a small rivulet, which, in passing through the village, is intersected by many artificial falls, and has a very pleasing appearance.

The marl grass (trifolium alpestre of Linnaeus and Hudson) now so generally known, owes its origin to an inhabitant of this parish, who collected the seeds from the meres which formerly divided the several properties, and increased his store from year to year, so as to be able, at last, to sell it in large quantities, when its cultivation became general.

About a mile south of this village, is an ancient Roman encampment, upon an elevated spot, called Blacker’s Hill, near Stock Hill Coal-work. It is formed by the meeting of two very deep and steep-sided valleys in a point facing the south, and partly by a curvilinear double rampart and foss to the north and east, of which the greater part is entire, and the whole in good preservation. Its figure altogether is that of an irregular quadrant, and the area contains about 15 acres.

On that part of the Old Down which is nearest this camp, are several tumuli, or barrows, and several pieces of old swords have been dug up.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CHILCOMPTON is a pretty village and parish, in a deep valley through which the Somer rivulet flows, forming miniature cascades in its course, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, 7 miles northeast from Wells, 6 north from Shepton Mallet, 11 ½ southwest from Bath, 16 south-by-east from Bristol and 134 from London; it is in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chewton, petty sessional division of Kilmerston, Clutton union, Temple Cloud county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John is a building of stone in the Pointed style, re-erected and enlarged in 1839, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, north porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: there are several marble tablets, and a monument to Mary, wife of Benjamin Harington gent. and daughter of Anthony Stocker esq. and Margaret (Capell) his wife; she died December 10, 1649: in 1897 the chancel was rebuilt at a cost of £1,300, in the Perpendicular style, of Pennant stone, with a massively-constructed chancel arch, and the chancel laid with ornamental and encaustic tiles and the church re-seated: the restorations and the additions were from designs of Mr. F. Bligh Bond F.R.I.B.A, of Bristol: the east window is of four lights, and has very delicate tracery of Early Perpendicular character, and contains medallions with emblems of the Passion and sacred monograms: the other windows are filled with plain cathedral glass: the reredos is of solid oak, containing a text panel and re-table: in 1900 the interior was thoroughly restored and re-seated and an organ provided: there are sittings for 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £165, including acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Henry Palmer Leakey. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The Wesleyan chapel at Norton Downs is a building of local stone, erected in 1888 from designs by Mr. O. Baker, architect, of Swindon, at a cost of £1,200: the pulpit and font are of serpentine marble, the former being a memorial to John and Ann Steeds, of Norton Hall, given by John White and Mary (Steeds) his wife; and the latter to Thomas Steeds, late of Red House, given by Iris nephew, Albert J. Steeds. The charities consist of a bequest of £100 left by Henry Werret in 1681, the interest to be appropriated to apprenticing poor boys of the parish, and about 40s. a year, being the interest of £40 left by James Blacker, of the parish of Binegar, to be distributed in bread among the poor, half on old Christmas Eve and half on Good Friday. At Blacker’s Hill are traces of a Roman encampment, with fosse roads from Bath and Ilchester. Norton Hall, the residence of Mrs. William Beauchamp, is a modern building in the Gothic style, on the main road from Bath to Shepton Mallet and about 6 miles from the latter; the lofty entrance hall is lighted by a dome filled with coloured glass; the house is panelled throughout, and the rooms are highly decorated: the grounds are extensive and well laid out. Woodlands is the residence of Captain Charles Paget Streeten R.N. The Marquess of Bath is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is red loam, with a subsoil of conglomerate, and the land is chiefly pasturage.

The area of the parish is 1,233 acres; rateable value, £4,139; the population in 1901 was 620 in the civil and 624 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” a detached part of Midsomer Norton parish, known as Mount Pleasant and Green Ball, has been added to this parish for civil purposes.

Parochial School, erected in 1876, for 82 children; average attendance, 73.
