Historical Description

CHURCHILL is a parish and village, in a beautiful valley on the road from Bristol to Bridgwater, 1 ½ miles east from, Sandford and Banwell station on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 13 southwest from Bristol and 5 north from Axbridge, in the Wells division of the county, Wrington division of the Winterstoke hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with a turret at the north-east angle and crocketed pinnacles, and containing 5 bells: in the church, on the north side of the chancel, is a quaint monument, renovated in 1884 by C. J. Simmons esq. to Thomas Latch esq. ob. 1644, and Sarah, his wife; the effigy of the former is clad in a coat of buff and boots with spurs, and below is a female effigy in a shroud; on the front of the tomb are figures of seven boys and four girls kneeling on cushions; the quaint but beautiful inscription is said to have been written by the celebrated Dr. Donne: there is a brass in good preservation, with effigies of a man in full armour and a lady, and an inscription to Ralph Jenyns, ob. 1572, and Jane, his wife, stated to be ancestors of the famous Sarah Jennings, Duchess of Marlborough: there was formerly a mortuary chapel at the east end of the south aisle; two stone effigies of a knight and his lady, once in this chapel, are now in the porch: the church was restored in 1879—80 at a cost of £1,900, when it was releaded, partially reseated with open benches of oak and the bells rehung: the chancel was re-seated in 1884, and a stained east window erected as a memorial to members of the Simmons family; a memorial window was also placed in the south aisle to the Rev. J. A. Giles D.C.L, of Churchill Court and rector of Sutton, Surrey, 1867—84, formerly well known as a topographical writer and a translator of classical and Anglo-Saxon authors: there are sittings for 230 persons. The churchyard was enlarged in 1892 to the extent of a quarter of an acre at a cost of £190, defrayed by Charles John Simmons esq. J.P. of Langford. A lych gate, the gift of Field-Marshal Sir John Lintorn Arabin Simmons G.C.B., G.C.M.G, was also erected in 1892 at a cost of about £110. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £314, with 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Stephen Prust Jose M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. The mission church of St. Mary at Langford, built in 1900, by Field-Marshal Sir J. Lintorn Simmons, as a memorial to Dame Blanche Simmons and to other members of the family, is an edifice of local stone in the style of the 13th century, and consists of apsidal chancel, nave, vestry, north porch, and a small western turret containing one bell: in the exterior west wall is a granite tablet, with a dedicatory inscription: the organ was bought in 1900 at a cost of £160: there are sittings for 120 persons. There is an endowment of £80 per year and a residence, given by F.M. Sir J. L. A. Simmons. The Rev. George William Sandford M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, has been curate-in-charge since 1900. There are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels. A new Wesleyan chapel, in the Gothic style, with Sunday school attached, was erected in 1880 at a cost of £5,000, wholly defrayed by Sidney Hill esq. of Langford House. The Jubilee Clock Tower was erected in 1897 by Sidney Hill esq. J.P. to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. The charities, amounting to about £50, are derived from lands in this parish and at Hutton Moor, and are distributed in gifts of bread and money on Old Christmas Day and Good Friday. Calamine, formerly used in the composition of brass, is found here, and its acquisition at one time afforded employment to a great portion of the inhabitants of this and neighbouring parishes: its use has, however, been superseded by another and cheaper material, and consequently it is not now sought after. Mendip Lodge, the seat of Benjamin Edwd. Somers esq. J.P. situated in woods on the side of Mendip, is an elegant mansion in the Italian style, with balconies in front: the ascent to it is by a zig-zag road of a mile in length, cut in the side of the hill: from the balconies varied and extensive views of the surrounding country are obtainable, and the Bristol Channel and Welsh mountains may be seen in the distance. On the summit of a high hill, called Dolbury or “Dolberrow,” also the property of Benjamin E. Somers esq. J.P. 2 ½ miles west-south-west, is an ancient encampment, still remaining in a very perfect state, and covering an area of upwards of 22 acres: its form is that of an irregular parallelogram, open at each end and fortified with a double vallum; the south-east side is rendered difficult of access by the steepness of the hill: Roman and Saxon coins and warlike weapons have frequently been found here. Langford House, the seat of Sidney Hill esq. J.P. is pleasantly seated on a rising ground, adjoining the Bristol and Bridgwater road, from which it is approached by a drive; the grounds are extensive and picturesque, and very tastefully laid out. Churchill Court (now in the occupation of Arthur H. Giles esq.) is near the church, and was purchased from the Jenyns family in 1651 by Sir John Churchill, who died here in 1685, after which the estate was alienated. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Benjamin Edwd. Somers esq. J.P. Field Marshal Sir John Lintorn Arabin Simmons R.E., G.C.B., G.C.M.G, of Blackwater, Hants, Sidney Hill esq. J.P. the Hesse family, William Petheram esq. and Mrs. Stephens are chief landowners. The soil is light red; on the hills it rests on the limestone and in the valley on the freestone. The crops are wheat oats, barley and turnips, but most of the land is in pasture. The area is 2,497 acres; rateable value, £5,523, the population in 1891 was 728, and in 1901, 744.

National School (mixed), erected in 1826 & enlarged in 1874 & again in 1896, for 180 children; average attendance, 146.
