Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
CLANDOWN was formed into an ecclesiastical parish July 6, 1849, out of that of Midsomer Norton, and includes a small portion of the hamlet of Welton; it adjoins Radstock on the east-north-east and is 2 miles north from Midsomer Norton station, Evercreech and Bath section of the London and South Western railway and about 10 north-west from Frome, in the Frome division of the county, Kilmersdon hundred and petty sessional division, Clutton union, Frome county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity is a cruciform building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, with vestry on the north side, nave, transepts, south porch, and a small central embattled tower containing one bell: the chancel was restored in 1873—4 by the Rev. W. H. West M.A. then vicar, at a cost of £2,000, and is divided from nave by a screen of Bath stone with gates: the communion table is of oak, and there is a marble reredos, around which is a screen, surmounted at each angle by figures of angels, bearing musical instruments: there are stained windows in the transepts; in 1882 the roof was ornamented in colour: the church is seated with open benches, affording sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1850. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £189, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Midsomer Norton, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Hugh Leyland Dawson M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel is an edifice of stone, built in 1874. The Primitive Methodist chapel was erected in 1880. Here is a brewery and a colliery. The population in 1891 was 1,127.
