Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
CLUTTON is a widely scattered village and parish on the high road from Bristol to Wells, with a station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 10 miles south from Bristol, 10 north-east from Wells and 10 south-west from Bath, in the Northern division of the county, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, Chew hundred, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Augustine is a line building, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the tower is Norman, and an arch of the same period divides the chancel and nave; there is also a Norman arch in the porch: the tower was rebuilt in 1728, and the church enlarged and rebuilt in 1865 at a cost of £2,000, the Earl of Warwick giving the sum of £300 and the remainder being raised by voluntary contributions and a rate: a gate with pillars and lamp was erected in 1887, and in 1888 the chancel was restored and decorated by the rector: the east window is stained and there is an ancient font: in 1897 a memorial window was presented by his widow and son to the Rev. Albert Boudier, rector of this parish 1879—97, who died on St. Basil’s day, 1897: there are sittings for 372 persons. The register dates from 1693, but is mutilated. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, including 54 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Warwick, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Leonard Rhys Hancock M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. In the village there are Congregational, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Here are collieries, stone quarries and a brewery; lime burning is also carried on. The parochial charities, amounting to an annual income of £33 15s. are now administered by a body of trustees under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, framed in 1899. The Earl of Warwick is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots, and there are several dairy farms. The area is 1,560 acres; rateable value, £5,782; the population in 1891 was 1,095, including six officers and 140 inmates of the workhouse.

The Union comprises the following parishes:-Cameley, Camerton, Chelwood, Chew Magna, Chew Stoke, Chilcompton, Clutton, Compton Martin, East Harptree, Farmborough, Farrington Gurney, High Littleton, Hinton Blewett, Litton, Midsomer Norton, Nempnett, Norton Malreward, Paulton, Publow, Radstock, Stanton Drew, Ston Easton, Stowey, Timsbury, Ubley, West Harptree & Widcombe. The population of the union in 1891 was 24,904, and in 1901 was 25,769; area, 47,897 acres; rateable value in 1901, £132,201.
The Workhouse, under the brow of a hill, was erected in 1837, with stone from the neighbouring quarries, & will hold 400 inmates; John Sansom, master; Rev. J. C. J.
A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1901; Henry Harding, clerk to the board.
Board (formerly National) School (mixed & infants), founded in 1728, enlarged in 1870 & again in 1885, for 175 children; average attendance, 130.
