Historical Description
COMBE ST. NICHOLAS is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles north-west from Chard station on the Great Western railway, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Kingsbury East, Ilminster petty sessional division, Chard union and county court district, rural deanery of Crewkerne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles with eastern chapels, north transept, south porch and a battlemented western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: the rood screen, once a fine work, has been removed and placed behind the choir stalls: there are stone staircases, formerly leading to the rood loft, on both sides of the church, those on the north side being in a small turret: in the north and south chapels and in the chancel are piscinae, and two hagioscopes remain in the chancel arch: the east window is stained: beneath the belfry are two ancient fonts; one of these, constructed from a solid block of Ham Hill stone, measures 7 feet 2 inches in circumference and 26 inches in diameter, and is of very early date: there are two ancient monuments, dating respectively from 1644 and 1680: the church was restored in 1863, and affords 450 sittings. The registers date from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £181, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1896 by the Rev. George Henry Elwell M.A. of New College, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel, on the Taunton road, erected in 1891, is a building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, from designs by Mr. R. Curwen A.R.I.B.A, of London, and will seat 170 persons; attached is a school-room, with four class-rooms and gallery and a large transeptal room, opened in 1897. The school-room, class-room, transept and chapel can all be thrown into one by the removal of the screens separating them. There is a Baptist chapel at Wadeford. Lime burning is carried on in the parish. A fair is held on the first Wednesday after December 10th, yearly, for cattle and peddlery. The late J. Wheadon esq. bequeathed £500 to the poor of this parish, the dividend to be distributed annually on Christmas Eve, and the Feoffees’ and other charities amount to about £200 a year. In a field at Higher Wadeford, in this parish, some interesting Roman remains, forming part of a Roman villa, were discovered some years ago, and in 1866, when the Somersetshire Archaeological Society visited the spot, some very good specimens of mosaic pavement were disclosed, drawings of which are in the Taunton Museum; in an adjacent field a spear head and fibula were found. Crickleaze, a mansion of white brick, in the Gothic style, seated on an eminence commanding extensive views of the surrounding country, about half a mile north from White Staunton, and one and a half north-west from Combe, is the property of the Right Hon. Lord Davey P.C. Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and occupied by George Lawrence esq. The farmhouse at Weston is interesting, as having belonged to the Bonnor family. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, principal landowners and owners of the great tithes. The soil is various, clayey and sandy in parts, and stone in parts; subsoil, chalk, flint, sand and clay, and varies greatly. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,098 acres; the rateable value, £5,832; the population in 1891 was 1,069.
Sticklepath, 1 mile north; Willhayne, half a mile east; and Eleigh Water, 2 ¾ east, are also places in this parish.
Wadeford stream rises about half a mile south-west of the church, and is joined at Wadeford by the stream running from Combe Head, thus forming the head of the river Isle.
