Historical Description

COMPTON BISHOP is a parish, 2 miles west-north-west from Axbridge station on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Winterstoke, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village is pleasantly situated in a hollow at the southern foot of the Mendip Hills, and open to those extensive moors which reach far away to Wells and Glastonbury: it extends eastward to Axbridge, part of West street in that town being within its limits, and on the south it is bounded by the river Axe. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, in the Early Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with open battlement, containing 6 bells, 5 cast in 1775 and one in 1883: in the chancel are remnants of ancient stained glass; the south doorway is a fine example of Norman work: in the south aisle is a monument to John Prowse esq. ob. 1688: the pulpit is a magnificent specimen of 16th century carving: the font, presumed to be of Saxon date, has a carved oak cover, with the date 1617: on the south side of the church stands an ancient cross: the church was restored in 1852 and again in 1883, when £388 was expended in thoroughly restoring the tower, including new parapets and pinnacles, and in rehanging the bells (one being recast): the church affords sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1641. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £116, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Henry Carpenter, of Trinity College, Dublin. In 1669, Thomas Morse gave £1 yearly, charged on his lands in this parish for ever, to be given one-half at Christmas, the other at Easter, to four or five people of this parish of the greatest age and poverty, not receiving weekly pay. Axbridge union workhouse is in this parish, but for ecclesiastical purposes only, a part of the parish, including the workhouse, having been transferred to the civil parish of Axbridge in August, 1897. On a high ridge of the hills to the south-west-well known as “Crook’s Peak,” is a large natural cave called “Denny’s Hole,” the entrance to which is nearly perpendicular, the roof expanding into a rough archway, and forming a kind of ante-chamber to one of infinitely greater extent, which, when first explored, was splendidly ornamented on the roof and sides with stalactites; some of the incrustations form the most fantastic shapes; but it has unfortunately been rifled of its ornaments, and will now scarcely repay the trouble of the descent. South Marsh Water Works, the property of Axbridge Rural District Council, has a pumping station here, erected in 1898; the water is pumped from a spring into a reservoir on the side of the hill, and from this the parishes of Weare, Badgworth, Biddisham, Lympsham, East Brent, Brent Knoll, Burnham Without and Mark are supplied. The manor derived its distinctive name from the Bishops of Bath and Wells, by whom it was possessed at the time of, or soon after, the Conquest: it was sequestered during the reign of Edward VI. but subsequently obtained by the family of Prowse. The trustees of the late Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. of Walton Hall, Warwick (d. 1897), who are lords of the manor, and H. A. Tiarks esq. are chief landowners. The soil is various; on the hills rock, but on the low moors it is light and very fertile, producing: early strawberries, potatoes and other vegetables. The area is 2,525 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £3,921; the population in 1901 was 350.

National School (mixed), restored in 1844, for 76 children; average attendance, 32; William Cray, in 1728, gave seven acres of land in the parish of Badgworth, the rents to be applied to “teaching poor children of this parish in reading English until they shall be perfected therein;” this endowment now produces £18 yearly, & is applied in aid of the school.
