Historical Description

CONGRESBURY is a large village and parish on the river Yeo, with a station on the Cheddar and Wells branch of the Great Wester railway, and is 9 miles east-northeast from Weston-super-Mare, 12 south-west from Bristol, 7 ½ north from Axbridge, and 2 south from Yatton, in the Wells division of the county, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, Winterstoke hundred, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south transept, south porch, two small chapels, one of which contains a handsome monument to the Merle family, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: the Have is divided from the chancel by a richly carved oak screen: the font is of the 12th century: the chancel retains its piscina, and there is a memorial window to the Rev. R. Maunsell-Eyre, erected by the present vicar: the church was re-seated in oak in 1880, at a cost of £500, and has sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Wick St. Lawrence annexed, joint net yearly value £530, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Robert Hedges Maunsell-Eyre M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The rectorial tithes are in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The Vicarage house, a remarkable specimen of the 15th century domestic architecture, was built by the trustees of Bishop Beckington (1465), and has the arms of the see of Bath and Wells over the porch. The Free Methodist chapel is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1878, at a cost of £620, and seating 150 persons. In connection with the Free Methodist chapel is a room which is used for public meetings &c. and holds about 150 persons. A fair is held here on the first Monday after September 8th. The charities are £5 yearly for bread. In the centre of the village stands a large cross about 21 feet in height. Woodlands is the seat of Col. William Long D.L., J.P. Cadbury House, on Cadbury hill, the site of a Roman encampment, is the property of Ca.pt. H. F. Hardman and the residence of James Richard Naylor esq. J.P., C.S.I. The trustees of the Bristol Municipal charities are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is light and heavy clay and some part marsh; subsoil, various, stone and bog. The chief crops are oats, wheat, barley and beans. The land is mostly in pasturage. The area is 4,443 acres; rateable value, £11,483; the population in 1901 was civil, 1,161, ecclesiastical, 1,239.

By Local Government Board Order 17,338, March 25, 1885, Heath Gate farm was transferred from Puxton to Congresbury and detached parts of Congresbury added to Wick St. Lawrence and Puxton.

Congresbury St. Anne's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed June 30th, 1865, out of the parishes of Congresbury, Wick St. Lawrence, Yatton, Kewstoke, Puxton and Banwell. The church of St. Anne, at Hewish, about 2 miles west of St. Andrew’s church, is an edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, erected in 1865, and consists of lofty apsidal chancel, transepts, nave and south porch: the original tower, when in course of construction it had reached a height of 70 feet, fell down, but was rebuilt, and the present tower contains one bell: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1865. The living is a vicarage, net income from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners £242, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Arthur Robinson M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, who is also vicar of Puxton. There is a Free Methodist chapel at Hewish, erected in 1838. The population in 1901 was 250.
