Historical Description

CORFE is a parish, 3 ½ miles south from Taunton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, in the Bridgwater division of the county, Taunton hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas is a building of stone, in the Transition-Norman style, restored in 1844 by Mr. E. Ferrey, diocesan architect, and re-enlarged and the tower rebuilt in 1858: it consists of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle and a tower at the north-west angle containing 4 bells: some of the windows are stained, the east window being a memorial to Dame, Josepha Sophia Cooper, d. November 28, 1848: in the chancel are mural monuments of marble to the Cooper family, including one to Sir Fredk. Grey Cooper bart. d. January 23, 1840; and a mural monument to Clifton Wheat esq. of Barton Grange, d. July 10, 1807: in 1881 a memorial window was inserted by Prebendary A. C. Ainslie LL.D, vicar here 1854—71, to his eldest son, and in 1891 an inscribed brass was erected in memory of various members of the Hulme family: there are sittings for 185 persons. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £135, with residence and 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of Francis Murray Newton esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Peter Whitfield Brancker M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The second poor money amounts to £7 6s. 10d. yearly. Francis Murray Newton esq. of Barton Grange, Pitminster, who is lord of the manor. Viscount Portman and Robert Alex. Kinglake esq. of Moushell, Godalming, are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy, red clay; subsoil, part clay, and in the more elevated parts limestone. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats, and there is some land in pasture. The acreage is 1,165; rateable value, £1,402; the population in 1891 was 320 in the civil and 325 in the ecclesiastical parish under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” two houses at Heale, in this parish, were transferred to Orchard Portman, and two others at Kelham Lane added to St. Mary Magdalen Without, Taunton, by Local Government Board Order 19,987, March 25, 1887.
