Historical Description

CREECH ST. MICHAEL (or Creek St. Michael, so named from the bend which the river takes at this place) is a parish and village on the river Tone, about 3 miles east from Taunton station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Andersfield, Taunton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael dates from the 12th century, and is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles and an embattled tower on the south side containing 5 bells: there is a curious old tomb to Robert Cuff, of this parish, ob. 1597, and tablets to the Sealey and Trivitt families: in a niche over the west door is a singular representation of “The Crucifixion,” and on the side of the doorway is a figure of St. Michael: the reading desk of carved oak is dated 1634: the church was restored in 1868, and has 350 sittings: in the churchyard are two yew trees of great age. The register dates from the year 1668. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £300, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1872 by the Rev. James Bownes M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. Dowlin’s charity of £8 5s. yearly is for fuel. John Wheadon, who died in 1862, bequeathed £250 to be invested in Consols, the interest arising therefrom to be distributed among the poor of the parish on December 24th annually. Court Barton, the property of Mrs, Dunning, is an ancient mansion: the north aisle of the church belongs to the Court Barton estate. There are paper mills here, carried on by Messrs. R. Sommerville and Co. Mr. Edwin T. Howard, of Wellington, is lord of the manor; Lieut.-Col. William Oliver Meade King, of Walford House, West Monckton; Col. Henry Bethune Patton C.B., V.D. of Stoke House, Stoke St. Mary; George Coombe esq. and Mrs. Dunning are the chief landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, gravel, loam and sandstone. The chief crops are wheat and barley, with rich grazing land. The area is 2,272 acres of land and 28 of water; rateable value, £10,980; the population in 1891 was 1,037.
