Historical Description

CROSCOMBE is a parish and village on the river Sheppy, a tributary of the Brue, 2 ½ miles west from Shepton Mallet station on the London and South Western railway and 2 miles west from the Great Western station, and 3 south-east from Wells station on the London and South Western and Great Western railways, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Whitestone, county court district of Wells, petty sessional division and union of Shepton Mallet, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells; it was formerly a place of importance, and had a market granted by a charter of Edward I., afterwards confirmed by Edward III. and Henry IV.; this privilege, falling into disuse for many years, was ultimately lost; it was, however, renewed at the solicitation of Hugh Fortescue esq. lord of the manor in 1728, but since then has been discontinued. A charter for a fair was also granted by Edward I. which has now likewise fallen into disuse. The church of St. Mary is an elegant edifice of Mendip lias, with dressings of Doulting stone, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles and spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the nave has a singularly fine coved pointed roof, and on the north wall of the chancel, within panels, are shields bearing the arms of Fortescue and other families: there are several monuments, and in the south aisle are mural brasses to James Bisse, ob. Nov. 18, 1606, and to William Bisse, ob. June 18, 1625, with effigies of both, and their wives and children kneeling at desks: in tie nave are two chandeliers, one of which was presented in 1707 by Hugh Fortescue esq.: in 1892 three stained windows were erected in the chancel: the stained east window was presented by the parishioners and others; the other two were given by Mrs. Nalder, as memorials to her husband and daughter: the communion table cloth was worked and presented by several ladies: the church was enlarged in 1831 and new roofed, and the tower and spire repaired in 1889—90 at a cost of £1,600: there are sittings for 520 persons: the churchyard was considerably enlarged in 1885. The register dates from the year 1472. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Wylie’s trustees, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Joseph Allott, of St. Bees. The charities are as follows:-Speeds charity, supporting two widows, or single women, of not less than 50 years of age; Jacob Ricketts esq. late of Clifton, left the interest of £222 7s. 10d. to be distributed amongst the poor of the parish; Mr. Samuel Hares gave £112 13s. 10d., one moiety of the interest to be divided amongst eight persons attending the parish church, the other moiety to be expended in beautifying the church; Ann Parsons gave ten shillings yearly to be distributed amongst ten single women, payable out of a field, called “Burleigh Field,” part of Dungeon Farm; there is also Townsends charity of £966 8s. 10d. the interest of which is for fuel and clothing; George’s charity of £5 a year payable from a field at North Wootton, is for females not receiving parochial help. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1890, will seat about 100 persons. The Baptist chapel here, a building of the 15th century, was formerly the residence or manor house of the Fortescue family; it has two Perpendicular windows on each side, and the end wall exhibits traces of the buttery hatch; between the windows is a good corbel shaft with the arms of Fortescue: attached to the building is a burial ground, covering over eight perches of land. In the village is another ancient building, also of the 15th century, ceiled in stone, and having a good square bay window in the upper storey; the ceiling, which is original, is ornamented with scrolls along a moulded cornice; the fireplaces and wooden window frames are also original, and there is a good octagonal chimney. Near one angle of the house stands an ancient cross of stone 14 feet in height, consisting of a shaft with finial rising from an octagonal base of three steps. Arthur Fownes Somerville esq. of Dinder House, the trustees of the late Rev. Edward Batchelor, John Frederick Hall esq. of Sharcombe, and William Luff esq. are the chief landowners. The Shepton, Mallet Urban District Council sewage farm is situated in this parish. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil is limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,811 acres; rateable value, £4,297; the population in 1891 was 610 in the civil and 586 in the ecclesiastical parish; 1901, 525 in the ecclesiastical parish, 605 civil.

By Local Government Board Order 16,337, March 24, 1884, Ham tithing was transferred from Croscombe to Pilton.

Maesbury, or Masbury Ring, Camp or Castle, the remains of an ancient Belgo-British fortification, and an object of much interest, is partly in this parish; it incloses an area of about six acres, and is surrounded by a deep fosse and vallum.

National School, erected in 1872, partly from a sum of £450 left by Mr. Townsend for that purpose, who also endowed it with a further sum of £1,000, now yielding £39 yearly; this endowment, in the hands of trustees appointed by the Charity Commissioners under the scheme, is devoted to the maintenance of the school fabric, insurance & other purposes; the Rev. John East M.A. rector from 1828, left for the benefit of the school £200 & Miss Esther Hartlebury, sister of Rev. J. East, left £48 5s.; it will hold 60 boys, 60 girls & 40 infants; average attendance, 39 boys, 38 girls & 39 infants.
