Historical Description

CROWCOMBE is a parish and village on the road from Taunton to Minehead, and on the west of the Quantock Hills, with a station called Crowcombe Heathfield, 1 ½ miles south, on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 11 north-west from Taunton, 8 north-east from Wiveliscombe and 172 by rail from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton and Freemanors, Williton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Quantoxhead, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch with parvise, and an embattled western tower, with a single pinnacle, containing a clock and 5 bells: an octagonal spire, formerly on the tower, was destroyed by lightning in 1735 and never replaced: the seats are of oak, with carved ends, dated 1534, and there is also an ancient screen: the south aisle and the chancel each retain a piscina: the reredos is a memorial to Mrs. Boles, wife of the Rev. James T. Boles M.A. late rector: the east window was placed in memory of Mr. Young, and there are mural monuments to the Carew family: the church affords 300 sittings. The registers date from the year 1641. The living is a rectory, net £300, including 63 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Young, of Crowcombe House, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Henry Christian Young M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. In the village is a fine 13th century cross, and there is another of the same date in the churchyard. Crowcombe Court, the seat of the Hon. Robert Cranmer Trollope J.P. the principal landowner, is pleasantly seated at the foot of the Quantock Hills and surrounded by fine lawns and beautiful pleasure grounds. The soil is a sandy loam, with some clay; subsoil, marl and stone rush, and produces excellent crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangolds, potatoes and turnips. The area is 3,177 acres; rateable value, £3,545; the population in 1901 was 374.

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1872, for 80 children; average attendance, 60; & partially endowed from Dr. James’ charity & in addition with funds left by the late Miss Carew, half of which, under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners framed in 1891, is given in prizes.
