Historical Description

On the western side of the parish of Cutcombe, is Dunkery, a very high mountain, the ascent to the summit of which, from the church at Watton Courtney, is three miles, and very steep. Its base is twelve miles in circumference. By an accurate measurement, it is found to be 1, 770 feet above the sea, at high-water mark. On the top of this hill are many rough loose stones, and among them the remains of three large fire-hearths, about eight feet square. —These fire-places form an equilateral triangle, and in the centre is another hearth, considerably larger than the others. At the distance of near a mile, and more than two hundred feet lower, the vestiges of two other hearths are visible, with vast quantities of loose disjointed stones scattered about them. These are the remains of beacons formerly erected on this elevated spot: the hill to this day retaining the name of Dunkery Beacon.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CUTCOMBE is a large parish and village, on the high road from Minehead to Exeter, 7 miles south-west from Dunster station on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 7 south-west from Minehead, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Carhampton, Dunster petty sessional division, union and county court district of Williton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John, restored in 1862, at a cost of £1,654, when a south aisle was added, is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells, rehung in 1898, at a cost of £150: the capitals of the pillars are enriched with delicate carved work; the pulpit is of stone, with carved panels; the former stone reredos, beautifully sculptured with a group of “the Last Supper,” after Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated painting, was removed in 1896 and placed in the south aisle, and a new reredos of white alabaster and glass mosaic erected; in 1896 a stained east window was erected to the memory of Philip Pleydell esq. of Brymore and Cutcombe, d. March 10th, 1890: the font is of black marble: the church is lighted by 20 lamps presented by Captain Hugh Berners R.N.: the ringing chamber is used as a vestry; in 1893 the organ was thoroughly repaired: there are sittings for 300 persons. The cross in the church yard was restored in 1898, at the cost of £100. The registers date from 1624: the earliest are in Latin. The living is a vicarage, with Luxborough chapelry annexed, joint net yearly value £325, with ½ acre of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Reginald Thomas de Carteret. Joyce’s charity of about £25 yearly value, arising from the rents of lands, is distributed to the poor by the Parish Council on Easter Tuesday. A portion of Dunkery Beacon, 1,708 feet high, stands in this parish, and is the highest mountain in the Western counties. Henry Hales Pleydell-Bouverie esq. of Brymore, Cannington, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late James Harvey Insole esq. of Chargot Lodge, Luxborough (d. 1901), are chief landowners. The soil is of a shalety kind; subsoil, hard stone, but not fit for building purposes. The crops are oats, turnips, and barley to a small extent. The acreage is 7,231; rateable value, £4,156; the population in 1901 was 446.

On March 25, 1883, by Local Government Board Order 14,615, a detached part of Timberscombe, known as Stetfold Rocks or Stadfold Rocks, was amalgamated with this parish.

Parochial School (mixed), founded by Richard Elsworth in 1714, & endowed with £60 yearly; a school-house, with master’s house, was erected in 1875, for 200 children; average attendance, 59.
