Historical Description

DINDER is a parish, pleasantly seated between two ranges of hills called Lyatt and Dulcote, 2 miles east of Wells station on the Great Western and Somerset and Dorset railways and 3 west of Shepton Mallet, in the Wells division of the county, Wells petty sessional division, union and county court district, hundred of Wells Forum, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael, originally a small Norman chapel, but enlarged about 1460, is a building of stone, now partly in the Perpendicular style and consisting of chancel (rebuilt 1872), nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the octagonal font is of stone, with quatrefoil ornaments, and there is a curious stone pulpit of the Jacobean period, dated 1621, and several monuments to the Somerville family and others: the reredos is of alabaster: three of the chancel windows, the west window and another in the north aisle are stained: in 1893 a brass font ewer, made specially at Bruges, was placed in the church: in 1872 the church was restored and reseated, and the walls lined with freestone, at a cost of nearly £2,000: there are sittings for 126 persons. The earliest existing register dates from 1696, those kept prior to that time having been destroyed. The living is a rectory, attached to the Prebend of Dinder in Wells cathedral, net yearly value £166, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1883 by the Rev. William Michell M.A. of New College, Oxford, and prebendary of Wells. The charities consist of a sum of £518 2s. 8d. India 3 per Cent. stock and land 1a. 2r. 8£p.; the dividends from the stock and the rents, amounting to £19 16s. 2d., are divided equally in payments towards the repairs of the parish church and gifts to the second poor of the parish at the discretion of the trustees: both stock and land are vested in the official trustees. The Rev. William Somerville left by will, in 1799, the sum of £200, the interest to be paid by the lord of the manor of Dinder for the expenses of a Sunday or other church school, and in part to be distributed at Christmas in doles to old women: this charity is entirely at the discretion of the lord of the manor of Dinder. Dinder House, a stone mansion, commanding some varied and picturesque views, is the seat of Arthur Fownes Somerville esq. J.P. Sharcombe, the seat of John Frederick Hall esq. J.P. is a stone mansion, standing on an eminence in ornamental and park-like grounds. The principal landowners are John Frederick Hall esq. and A. F. Somerville esq. who is lord of the manor. The soil varies much; in some parts it is a red loam; the higher portion of the declivity of Mendip is fair arable land; subsoil, limestone and gravel. The land is mostly in pasture. The acreage is 1,078; rateable value, £2,268; the population in 1901 was 217.

Masbury Castle, a British encampment on the summit of the Mendip Hills, is partly in this parish and partly in that of Croscombe, and is the property of J. F. Hall esq.

Church of England School (mixed), erected in 1851, by James Curtis Somerville & is the property of Arthur Fownes Somerville esq. who keeps it in repair at his own cost, with residence for the mistress, enlarged 1884, for 56 children; average attendance, 51.
