Historical Description
DITCHEAT is a village and parish, on the river Alham, which divides the hamlet of Alhampton from the rest of the parish, and bounded on the south by the river Brue, 1 ¼ miles south-west from Evercreech Junction station, and 2 ½ south-west from Evercreech station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 2 north from Castle Cary station on the Frome and Yeovil section of the Great Western railway and 11 south-east from Wells, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Whetstone, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Shepton Malled, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an elegant edifice of blue has stone, in the Perpendicular style, with traces of earlier work, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch, and an embattled central tower with a bold octagonal stair turret at the north-west angle and small pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the whole exterior is embattled and the parapets of the nave and aisles are relieved by crocketed pinnacles springing from carved corbels along the string course; the sides and angles of the entire fabric are strongly buttressed; the church was originally Norman, and one small window of this period remains: in the 13th century the chancel was enlarged, and in the following century, about 1350, both chancel and nave were raised, the former acquiring by this change its double ranges of windows; on the parapet of the chancel are the initials of John Selwood, abbot of Glastonbury 1456—93: the piers and arches of the central tower appear to belong to the Early Decorated period and the lower stage has fan-traceried vaulting; access to the tower is curiously obtained by a covered stair constructed on the exterior east wall of the north transept, across the roof of which the tower turret is then approached; the nave retains a fine tie beam roof with some original colouring; the transept roofs are similar: the pulpit and reading desk are Jacobean: a sundial remains in the porch and there are sittings for 400 persons: in the churchyard is an ancient stone cross 12 feet in height. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with residence and 86 acres of glebe, in the gift of Major-Gen. R. L. Leir-Carleton, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Edward Leir M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The old rectory house is a fine building of stone, in the Gothic style, erected in 1873 by Dean Gunthorp, who was then Dean of Wells and rector of Ditcheat: in the hall is an oak screen, whereon are inscribed the dates of successive rectors since 1433: this residence having passed by exchange to Major-Gen. Leir-Carleton, is now called the “Priory,” and is occupied by Mrs. Hoare. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Linsey, cheese-cloth and bandages are woven here at works belonging to Mr. E. King. In a field, at a short distance from the village, is a petrifying spring, called the “Holy Well.” The manor house is a handsome structure of the 17th century. Charles Hill Dawe esq. who is lord of the manor, and Major-General Richard Langford Leir-Carleton, of Greywell hill, Winchfield, Hants, are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are various, principally clay and marl. The chief crops are orchard produce and some land in pasture. The area is 3,692 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £7,220; the population in 1901 was 680.
By Local Government Board Order 10,252, Dec. 19, 1879, the hamlet of Lottisham was transferred from this parish to West Bradley.
A School Board of 5 members was formed November 9, 1874, for the principal part of the parish; W. E. Leversedge, Evercreech, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), built in 1874, at a cost of £1,300, for 150 children; average attendance, 108.
