Historical Description

DOULTING is a parish, 2 miles east from Shepton Mallet station and 2 west from Cranmore station on the Wells and East Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 10 west-south-west from Frome and 7 east-southeast from Wells, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Whitestone, petty sessional division and union of Shepton Mallet, county court district of Wells, Cary rural deanery of Shepton Mallet division, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Aldhelm is a large cruciform structure, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with side chapels, nave, transepts, north and south porches, and a central octagonal embattled tower, with graceful spire, containing 6 bells: on the outside of the south porch are figures of St. Peter, St. John and St. Bartholomew: the reredos of Caen stone has in the centre a fine malachite cross, and the niches on either side contain figures of St. Aldhelm, St. Dunstan, St. David, St. Augustine, St. Columba and St. Ethelburga: the east and west windows are stained, the latter having been erected by the Rev. E. M. Farquhar M.A. when curate here, 1873—83, as a memorial to Mary Ellerton, his wife: there is also a memorial window, erected in 1869 by the vicar to his only daughter, and in the transepts are others to the Fussell family: the roof is of oak, beautifully carved: the choir is separated from the nave by an oak screen, and the choir stalls are also of oak: there are modern tablets and brasses to the Paget, Ridley, Fox and Tucker families: in 1869 the church was restored and the tower and spire rebuilt, the spire being replaced stone for stone; the chancel was also rebuilt in the Decorated style, at the sole expense of the late Rev. Prebendary Horner, then patron: there are sittings for 320 persons. Within the Vicarage grounds rises a constant spring, called “St. Aldhelm’s well,” which forms the source of the river Dulcote; in the churchyard is a fine old cross, 23 feet in height, and about 500 years old. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelries of Downhead and East and West Cranmore annexed, joint net yearly value £400, with 155 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of J. Fortescue Horner esq. of Mells Park, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John Darbyshire M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. A mission chapel was erected at Priestleigh in 1900, in memory of the Rev. James Hamilton, vicar 1867— 96, and will seat 70 persons; service is held every alternate Sunday morning and evening. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel at Waterlip, and a Wesleyan chapel at Priestleigh, both in this parish. The charities amount to about £5 yearly. Near the church is a large and ancient barn with a fine timber roof, formerly belonging to the Abbots of Glastonbury, and at Bodden are the remains of an ancient roadside cross. There are several large quarries of fine white freestone in this parish, resembling that at Bath, but of a harder nature and more durable; from these quarries were supplied the materials for building Wells Cathedral, St. Cuthbert’s church and the chief part of Glastonbury Abbey. St. Andrew’s quarries, on the glebe land and worked by Mr. Sidney Witcombe, are supposed to adjoin the spot from which the stone used for building Wells Cathedral was drawn. On the north and south of this parish are situate the celebrated Doulting stone quarries, in which a large number of men are employed. The work includes not only the quarrying and shaping of the stone in blocks, but the preparing and working it ready for fixing in every kind of building. For the latter purpose machinery is also largely used. The quarries and works are now owned by the Ham Hill and Doulting Stone Co. Edge tools are made here. The Right Hon. Sir Richard Horner Paget bant. P.C. of Cranmore Hall, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is light loam; subsoil, limestone, freestone and clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 3,438 acres; rateable value, £7,244; and the population in 1891 was 667.

By Local Government Board Order 16,336, March 24, 1884, a malthouse at Charlton Brewery was transferred from Doulting to Shepton Mallet, and by Order 16,335, Whitestone Farm was added from the latter to Doulting.

Beard Hill, Bodden, Chelynch, Farncombe, Newman Street, Priestleigh and Waterlip are hamlets in this parish.

Parochial School (mixed), enlarged in 1895, for 200 children; average attendance, 95.
