Historical Description
DOWNHEAD is a small parish and straggling village, near the Frome and Shepton Mallet road, 2 ½ miles northeast from Cranmore station on the Witham and Wells branch of the Great Western railway, and 5 ½ north-northeast from Shepton Mallet, in the Frome division of the county, Whitestone hundred, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Frome county court district, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of All Saints is a building of stone of the Perpendicular period, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and containing 3 bells: in 1882 the church (with the exception of the tower) was restored, at the sole cost of Viscount Portman: there are sittings for 120 persons. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a chapelry, annexed, together with those of East and West Cranmore, to the vicarage of Doulting, joint net yearly value £400, with 155 acres of glebe, with residence at Doulting, in the gift of J. Fortescue Horner esq. of Mells Park, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John Darbyshire M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Doulting. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1863. Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor, and the vicar of Doulting are the chief landowners. The soil is light, on the limestone. The land is chiefly pasture for dairy purposes. The area is 1,573 acres; rateable value, £1,254; the populations in 1901 was 143.
