Historical Description

Dulverton, in the hundred of Williton Freemanors, on the borders of Devonshire, is a small but very agreeable town, pleasantly situated on the river Exe, and on the high road from London into Cornwall. The market is on Saturday, and there are two fairs, on July 10, and November 8.

Ancient records inform us that this town was occupied by the West Saxon kings, and it was still in the possession of the crown at the time of the Conquest.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

DULVERTON is a market and union town, head of a petty sessional division and parish, on the east bank of the river Barle and bounded on the east by the river Exe, 2 miles north-west from Dulverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 5 from Bampton, 14 north from Tiverton, 21 west from Taunton and 189 from London: it is in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton, county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is lighted by oil lamps, and supplied with water conveyed by pipes from a reservoir at the top of the town. The church of All Saints’, rebuilt with the exception of the tower in 1855 at a cost of £3,200, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells: the 5th bell was brought from Barlynch priory, at its dissolution A.D. 1536, and bears an invocatory legend to the Virgin: the 6th bell was erected in 1883 as a memorial to the late Samuel H. Warren, who had held a number of public offices for many years: in 1873—4 a reredos of Bath stone and an organ were erected at the cost of B. M. Collyns esq. who also gave illuminated plates, in memory of his deceased parents, and the sacrarium was also repaired at the expense of J. B. Collyns esq.; the tower coped with Bath stone, the gift of the Dowager Lady Carnarvon; the pulpit, desk and font removed and reset and a lectern set up: all the windows are stained, those in the nave being given in 1885 by F. G. Williams esq.; the east window, erected in 1864, is a memorial to the Beague family, of Hollam: there are others to Henry, third Earl of Carnarvon, d. 9th December, 1849; the Dowager Countess of Carnarvon, d. 26th May, 1876; to William Trevor, George Hall Peppin and to the Pearse family: there are 750 sittings. The churchyard was terraced and improved in 1899. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1893 by the Rev. James Bridger Philby B.A., S.C.L. of Lincoln College, Oxford, and a surrogate. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1831, and affording 220 sittings. The town is compact and the neighbourhood is famed for its trout fishing, but still more for the red deer sheltered between this and Exmoor (once a royal forest), in numbers sufficient for the maintenance of a fine pack of stag hounds, known as the “Devon and Somerset,” now under the mastership of R. A. Sanders esq. of Exford; Philip Evered esq. of Milton’s Rocks, Exton, being hon. secretary to the hunt; the kennels are at Exford, near Taunton. The district is also hunted during the season by several packs of fox hounds and harriers, including the Quarme Harriers (now kennelled at Exford), owned by, and under the mastership of Morland Greig esq. of Edgcott. There are some good hotels in the town, the Carnarvon Arms & others. There is a county police station under the charge of a sergeant. A monthly cattle market (which is well attended by farmers and dealers) is held on the first Tuesday in each month, near the railway station; the market day is on Saturday, A coach runs during the season between Dulverton station and Minehead, the route through the Exe valley being one of the most charming in England. The charities for distribution and educational purposes amount to £28 yearly. Pixton Park is the seat of Elizabeth Countess of Carnarvon; the mansion, beautifully situated in a deer park extending over 150 acres, is now unoccupied. Combe is the residence of Mrs. Chapman; Hollam, of Mrs. Arthur St. John-Mildmay; and North Moot House, of Sir Frederick Wills bart. M.P., J.P. The Earl of Carnarvon, who is lord of the manor; Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Adand bart. of Killerton, Exeter, the Earl of Portsmouth, Capt. Charles, Beague St. John-Mildmay, the Anstey family, Richard Bere esq. and Charles Bere esq. of the Lodge, Milverton, the trustees of the late Rev. Beauchamp Kerr Warren Kerr-Pearse M.A. rector of Ascot Heath, Berks (d. 1900), and Hugh Marriott-Dodington esq. are the chief landowners. The area of the parish is 8,678 acrete of land and 63 of water; rateable value, £6,999 10s.; the population in 1891 was 1,265, including 40 officers and inmates of the workhouse; in 1901 it was 1,369.
