DUNDRY is a parish and village on a range of hills, or rather on one vast hill, 790 feet above the level of the sea, 3 ½ miles south-east from Flax Bourton station on the main line of the Great Western railway and 5 south-west of Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Hartcliffe with Bedminster, Long Ashton petty sessional division and union, county court district of Bristol, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The register dates from the year 1560. The church of St. Michael, rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in 1861, is a substantial edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a fine embattled western tower of Perpendicular date, with pinnacles, and containing 8 bells: the tower was built in the reign of Edward VI. by the Merchant Venturers of Bristol, and being lofty and situated on so high an eminence forms a conspicuous object for many miles round: in 1890 the pinnacles were restored at a cost of about £400: all the windows are stained: in the churchyard stands an ancient cross raised on four stone steps, the total height is about 24 feet: there are sittings for 300 persons. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £127, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Chew Magna, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Herbert Fletcher Mann B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. Here is a Baptist chapel, built in 1828. The charities amount to £9 10s. yearly. Here are quarries of freestone of a very durable character. Miss Colthurst is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are William Adlam esq. F.S.A, of Chew Magna, and the Bristol Charity Trustees. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is of colite formation. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,799 acres; rateable value, £6,403; the population in 1891 was 631.

By Local Government Board Order 16,500, March 24, 1884, Barrow Common and another detached part of Winford was transferred to this parish.
