Historical Description
Dunkerton lies in a deep valley, on the Fosse-road. The name is derived from Dun, a hilly Carn, a monument of stones, and Ton, a town; there being at some little distance north-east from the church, a remarkable eminence, called Duncombe Hill, whereon once stood a carnedd, or hill of stones, erected by our British ancestors, to commemorate some victory or extraordinary event.
DUNKERTON is a village and parish, 2 miles northeast from Camerton terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway from Hallatrow, and 2 ½ north-west from Wellow station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, 5 south-west from Bath and 4 north-north-east from Radstock, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. A small rivulet waters part of the parish. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the communion table is of oak with richly carved panels of cedar: all the windows are stained, the east window being a memorial to the Rev. Frederick Grosvenor, 25 years rector of the parish; and there are some good specimens of hammered ironwork, notably the pulpit, which stands on an alabaster base: the church (with the exception of the tower) was rebuilt in 1859, and has sittings for 150 persons. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from 1748; burials, 1752. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Gerard Ludlow Hallett LL.M. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel. The principal landowners are William Edward Vaughan, who is lord of the manor, James Daniels and the trustees of the late Robert Cooke. The surface is hilly and there are some fine views from the high grounds. The soil is clayey; subsoil, stone. The crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans, but the land is chiefly pasture. The area is 1,211 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £1,686; the population in 1891 was 374, exclusive of the ecclesiastical parish of St. John, Peasdown, which was formed out of the parishes of Dunkerton, Wellow and Camerton, Aug. 11, 1874.
National School (mixed), erected in 1846, for 100 children; average attendance, 63.
