Historical Description

East Brent, a very inconsiderable village, upon the great road from Bristol to Bridgewater. This neighbourhood is supposed to have suffered much injury from the Danes; and to have been the theatre of military transactions long before the period of their invasion. At a small distance southward from the church of East Brent, stands a singular eminence, of a conical form, called Brent Knoll.

East Brent church is a very handsome edifice, one hundred and fourteen feet in length, and fifty feet in breadth, consisting of a nave, chancel, north and south aisles, all covered with lead. At the west end is an embattled tower, eighty feet high, whereon is an elegant spire rising to the height of sixty feet. In the church windows there has been some good painted glass; in one of them is the salutation, the nativity of our Saviour, and the wise men offering their presents, &c.; in others various representations of passages from the New Testament.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EAST BRENT is a parish and village, on the old Bristol and Exeter road, 2 miles east from Brent Knoll station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, 4 ¼ north-east from Highbridge and 7 south from Weston-super-Mare, in the Wells division of the county, Brent-cum-Wrington hundred, Axbridge union and petty sessional division, county court district of Weston-super-Mare, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone in the Transition style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of five stages, with low pinnacles and a lofty spire, and containing a clock and 5 bells: on, the south side of the chancel, which has been rebuilt, are two sedilia: the nave has a coved roof with pendants, one of which bears the date 1637: the organ gallery has a carved front dated 1635: the pulpit is apparently Jacobean, and is approached through the south wall; the north aisle, re-ceiled with oak about 1890, has some remains of a stone seat on the north side; the east window is filled with ancient glass illustrating the “Passion and Ascension of Our Lord,” and the “Coronation of the Virgin”; there is another window in this aisle containing 16th century glass of figures of saints, and in some of the remaining windows are figures of winged seraphs: at the west end of the south aisle is the recumbent effigy of a priest, in eucharistic vestments with the head on a double pillow, and in the splays of the window above are niches: at the east end of the aisle there remains a piscina: on the exterior of the church over the west window are several elaborate carvings in three canopied stages, representing the “Virgin and Child,” “God the Father, holding the Crucifix on his knees,” “Christ enthroned-crowning the Virgin”: at the south-east angle of the church are the stairs formerly leading to the rood loft: the church also contains some brasses and monuments, including a large tablet to the Reed family, and one, placed in 1895, to commemorate the jubilee of the Ven. George Anthony Denison M.A. late vicar, who died in March, 1896: there are in all eighteen stained windows: the nave is seabed with fine oaken benches of the 14th century: the church has been restored since 1873 at a cost of £500, and affords sittings for 450 persons. At the west end of the churchyard lies a mutilated effigy of a layman, temp. Rich. II. and on the south side are the remains of a cross, on an octagonal stepped base, restored in 1895. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £560, including 80 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Frederick Samuel Pierpoint Seale B.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The vicarage house is a building of stone, situated near the base of Brent Knoll. The chapel of ease of The Good Shepherd, at Rooksbridge, is the property of the Rev. F. S. P. Leale; it will seat about 60 persons. The Wesleyan chapel is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1871 at a cost of £450, and will seat 140 persons. There is a Baptist chapel at Rooksbridge, built in 1850, and enlarged in 1887, and now seating about 150. There was anciently here a Benedictine priory, founded as a cell to the abbey of Glastonbury. Miss Anne Theodora Gaskell, of Ingersley Hall, Rainow, Macclesfield, Cheshire, is lady of the manor; and S. Meade-King esq. William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, and Henry Ruskin Poole esq. of South Petherton, are chief landowners. The surface soil is alluvial; the subsoil is clay and underneath peat. The land is chiefly in pasture. The acreage is 3,506; of these about 250 are arable; rateable value, £10,353; the population in 18911 was 716 in the civil and 683 in the ecclesiastical parish; in 1901, the total population was 662.

By Local Government Board Order 17,341, March 25, 1885, a house in Pill Row was transferred from Brent Knoll, two houses in Vole Road from Mark, a house in Pill Bow from Badgwortih, and one in Pill Row from Chapel Allerton.

National (mixed), erected in 1841, for 100 children; average attendance, 33.

Parochial, erected in 1879, for 132 children; average attendance, 55.
