St. Michael’s church is a Perpendicular building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transepts, north porch and an embattled tower on the east side of the north transept with a pierced arcaded parapet and small pinnacles, and an elegant octagonal stair turret at the north-east angle rising above the parapet, and relieved by string courses continued from the tower; it contains a clock with chimes and 8 bells: the stained west window is a memorial to George Bullock esq. of North Coker House, d. 1885, and the east window to Maria Caroline (Grove), his wife, d. 2nd Feb. 1866: in the north transept is a memorial window to Emily Lucy (Portman), first wife of George Troyte-Chafyn-Grove esq. d. 8th Nov. 1856, aged 19: in the north transept are several mural tablets to the Bullock family, dating from 1753: a brass to George Bullock esq. mentioned above, and memorial's to the Skinner family, 1769—1806, and to Thomas Leaves, of Pendomer, d. 1717, and his wife, d. 1724; a memorial brass has also been erected to the Rev. Rowland Huyshe, vicar from 1825; the reredos was presented by the present Mrs. Troyte-Chafyn-Grove, who also partially re-seated the church at her own expense; the remainder of the nave was re-seated and re-floored in 1896, and in 1897 hot water apparatus was laid down at a total cost of £300: there are sittings for 434 persons. The register dates from the year 1560, and there is a list of vicars extending from the 13th century. The living is a vicarage, neb yearly value £228, including 4 ½ acres of glebe and £55 augmentation, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Charles Powell B.A. of London University. The great tithes, commuted at £335, are administered by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, £55 thereof being granted to the augmentation of the living. The cemetery, one acre and a half in extent, with one mortuary chapel, was formed in 1877 at a cost of £555, and is under the control of the Parish Council, acting as a burial board. In the parish are almshouses, founded by Archdeacon Helyar about 1640, for eleven women and one man, who receive 3s. 6d. per week each. The ancient manor house, said to have been the birthplace, in 1652, of William Dampier, the circumnavigator, is now a farm house, and retains some interesting portions of the original building, erected in the Perpendicular period, including a spacious porch of two storeys, with a large recessed and moulded entrance arch and a square-headed two-light window above; there is a similar window on one side of the porch, and the main block has two lofty pointed windows, formerly belonging to the hall; these are of two lights each, with transoms and trefoil heads, and in the head of each window is a pentagonal opening; the remainder of the house has been much modernised.

In 1753 the foundations of a Roman villa and tesselated pavement were discovered here. Coker Court is a mo-demised structure of the 15th century, the property and residence of Miss Dorotihy Helyar; it is situated on an eminence close to the church, overlooking a fine expanse of country. North Coker House, the seat of George Troyte-Chafyn-Grove esq. D.L., J.P., F.S.A, is a modern mansion of Ham stone. Naish Priory, the property of Troyte-Chafyn-Grove esq. is an interesting building of the 14th and 15th centuries, and contains a chapel, with a fine east window, refectory, hall and dormitory; it was restored and added to in 1899, and is now (1901) in the occupation of Richard Earle Welby esq. Miss Dorothy Helyar and George Troyte-Chafyn-Grove esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy loam; the subsoil is clay and sandy loam. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, roots and a large portion of land in pasture. The area is 2,078 acres; rateable value, £4,864; the population in 1891 was 863.
