Historical Description

EAST HARPTREE is a parish and village, on the northern side of the Mendip Hills, in a rich and fertile valley, on the road from Bristol to Wells, 6 miles southwest from Clutton station on the Bristol and Radstock branch of the Great Western railway, 8 north from Wells, 12 south from Bristol and 17 south-west from Bath, in the Northern division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Laurence is a building of stone of various dates, but chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, of various dates; the oldest, circ. 1400, bearing the following inscription: “— IHESUS-NAZARENUS-REX:” the chancel walls are Norman, but the windows are later insertions: the south porch has a Norman arch, of probably unique design: in the south porch is an altar tomb, with the effigy, in armour, of Sir John Newton kt. who died 10 April, 1568, and figures of his eight sons and twelve daughters kneeling, the whole beneath a canopy with an inscription and shield of arms: the church was restored in 1883—4 a cost of £2,324, and affords sittings for 280 persons. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net yearly income £260, including 76 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1900 by the Rev. George Byrom Shallcross, of St. Aidan’s. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Michael and erected in 1883, is a building of stone, and will seat 150 persons. There is a Free Methodist chapel, built in 1866 and rebuilt in 1899 at a cost of £1,500. The charities amount to about £150 yearly value. A clock tower, the gift of W. W. Kettlewell esq. was erected in 1897 to commemorate the 60 years’ reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. The remains of Richmond Castle, the ancient fortress of the Harptrees and Gournays, lie about half a mile south-west of the church. In 1138 it was garrisoned by Sir William de Harptree in favour of Maud the Empress against King Stephen, who, after the siege of Bristol, approached and pretended to lay siege to it; the garrison, however, made a sally to attack the rear of his army, which the king observing, hastened with his cavalry towards the walls, reaching them before the garrison could secure their retreat, set fire to the gates and applying scaling ladders to the walls made himself master of the place; the castle was not entirely demolished till the time of Henry VIII. when Sir John Newton dug up its old foundations for the purpose of erecting a new house, called “Eastwood”; it was an irregular fortification, the principal approach being from the south-west, and vestiges of a circular building are still visible; on the north and east sides, is a steep descent into a deep, narrow, winding glen, the sides of which are thickly covered with wood. Eastwood is now the seat of William Henry Bateman Hope esq. J.P.

Harptree Court, the residence of William Wildman Kettlewell esq. M.A., J.P. at a short distance to the east of the church, is an elegant and substantial building in the Renaissance style, with wings and a central portico, and stands in an inclosed park, ornamented with ponds, waterfalls and beautiful gardens and plantations.

At Lamb Hill, 1 mile south-west from the village, is a very remarkable cavern, the property of Col. Bolton, with a perpendicular shaft nearly 70 fathoms deep and 240 feet in lateral extent at the extremity: the bottom consists of loose rocks, and the roof is very firmly vaulted with limestone, and the pendent stalactites, together with the continual dropping of the water, make it an object of much local interest; it was fully explored some years ago by Mr. Joseph Nichols, mining agent. Lord Waldegrave is lord of the manor. The. principal landowners are William Henry Bateman Hope esq. of Eastwood, William Irvine esq. and William Wildman Kettlewell esq. M.A., J.P. The soil is generally rich and light, with a subsoil of red sandstone, limestone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans, and there are many orchards. There is a majority of pasture land in this parish, the greater proportion being of excellent quality. The area is 2,591 acres; rateable value, £4,456; the population in 1901 was 594 in the civil and 571 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National School (mixed), originally founded in 1653 by Sir John Newton & supported in part by endowments of £30 from Plumiey’s charity & £12 10s. from Wollen's charity: a new school room was built in 1897 for 70 children, a class room in 1899 for 40 children, and an infants’ room completed in 1901 for 50 children, with a large cloak room: the school will now hold 160 children; average attendance, 117.
