Historical Description

EASTON-IN-GORDANO (commonly called St. George) is a village and parish, 1 mile west from Pill station on the Bristol and Portishead branch of the Great Western railway and 7 west-north-west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county of Somerset, Portbury hundred, Long Ashton union and petty sessional division, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Avon falls into the Bristol Channel on the north side of the parish. The church of St. George, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1872, from designs by Mr. Ewan Christian, architect, of London, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with four pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 fine bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Cann de Winton esq. late of Clifton, and there are a number of other memorial windows and monuments of the 17th century, to the Morgan, Wilkins and de Winton families: in 1890 a fine alabaster reredos was erected by Henry John Mirehouse esq. as a memorial to his wife and two sons: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £173, including 35 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1867 by the Rev. Arthur Walker M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and surrogate: the rectory was built in 1868.

The charities amount to £16 yearly. There is a brewery at Lodway. St. George’s Hill is the residence of Henry John Mirehouse esq. Maj. Antony Gibbs of Tyntesfield, Wraxall, who is lord of the manor; H. J. Mirehouse esq.; Capt. Robert Henry de Winton, of Graftonbury, Hereford, and Mrs. Hall, of Keswick House, are the principal landowners. The crops are roots, barley and wheat, but the land is chiefly in pasture. The soil is rather rich loam; the subsoil is clay. The area of the civil parish is 1,868 acres of land, 2 of water, 22 of tidal water and 207 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,383; the population in 1891 was 651, exclusive of 1,725 in Pill, which is given separately in this work.

By Local Government Board Order 16,500, Mar. 24, 1884, Ham Green, Happerton, and another detached part of Portbury, were transferred to Easton-in-Gordano.
