Burtle History
BURTLE is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1846 from Edington: it is about 1 mile north from Edington Junction station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, and about 9 north-east from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, Witley hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of SS. Philip and James, erected in 1839, at the cost of the late Miss Field, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch land a western turret containing one bell: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, in the gift of Mrs. Poole, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Lewis. The population of this district in 1891 was 292.
