Historical Description

ENGLISHCOMBE (or Ingles Combe) is a parish and village near the road from Bath to Wells, 1 ½ miles southwest from Twerton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, and 3. south-west from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The ancient Wansdyke runs through the parish. The church (dedication unknown) is an ancient building of stone, in the Early Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, south chapel, nave, south porch and an embattled central tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the church was restored and reseated in 1885 at a cost of £600, and has 135 sittings. The register dates from the year 1728. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £170, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1882 by the Rev. Francis Douglas Dymock M.A. of Magdalen Hall, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan Chapel at English Batch. H.R.H, the Duke of Cornwall and York K.G. is lord of the manor, the greater part of the parish belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall. The soil is stone brash; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,832 acres; rateable value, £1,485; the population in 1891 was 328 in the civil and 426 in the ecclesiastical parish. Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act,” 1882, a detached part of Twerton has been added to English Combe, and by Local Government Board Order 18,114, March 25, 1885, a detached part, of English Combe was transferred to Twerton.

A School Board of 5 members was formed April 15, 1882; John E. F. Wason, 4 Bloomfield crescent, Bath, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed & infants), erected in 1872, for 90. children; average attendance, 60.
