Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
ENMORE is a parish and village, under the Quantock Hills, 4 miles south-west from Bridgwater station on the Great Western and Somerset and Dorset railways, in the Bridgwater division of the county, west division of Andersfield hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bridgwater, archeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three buys, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells, a new tenor having been added in 1897: the doorway of the south porch has a good Norman arch, which, as well as four of the windows, were in the old church; the stained east window was presented by Miss Corrick, and others in the chancel by the Rev. W. Rouse, rector; Captain Loraine-Grews and Mrs. Wood: in 1873 the church was restored and a north aisle added at a cost of £1,700; there are sittings for 280 persons: in the churchyard is an ancient cross about 11 feet in height. The register dates from the year 1618. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. John Levien, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Wanford Rouse, of St. Aidans and L.Th, of Durham University. Skynner’s charity of £2 15s. yearly is for the second poor of the parish. Enmore Castle was built by the Earl of Egmont, after the estate had passed from the Malets, who had held it for four centuries: in 1833 the property was bought by Nicholas Broadmead esq. when the castle was dismantled and the present structure erected in its place: it is now re-named Enmore Park, and is the seat of William Bucknell Broadmead esq. J.P.; the park is 300 acres in extent and there is a lake of 4 ½ acres. Barford House is a handsome stone building, seated in a valley, and is the residence of Captain J. Guy Courtenay Evered R.N. Charles Theodore Halswell Kemeys-Tynte esq. of Halswell House, Goathurst, W. B. Broadmead esq.; Capt. J. G. C. Evered R.N. and Mrs. Wood are the principal landowners. The soil is Ted clay and the subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,426 acres; assessable value, £1,495; the population in, 1891 was 285 in the civil and 275 in the ecclesiastical parish.
By Local Government Board Order 7,749, Dec. 20, 1878, Quantock Farm, Park and Wood were transferred from Spaxton and by Order 20,641, March 24, 1887, a detached part of Broomfield was also added.
National School (mixed), enlarged in 1888, at a cost of £103, for 80 children; average attendance, 67; & endowed with £36 yearly, arising from cottage property left in 1850 by the Rev. John Poole.
