Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
EVERCREECH is a village and parish, with a station on the Bath Extension, and another 1 ¼ south, called Evercreech Junction, on the main line of the Somerset and Dorset railway, and 3 ½ miles south-south-east from Shepton. Mallet, 3 ½ north-west from Bruton, and 116 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Wells hundred and Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, rural deanery of Bruton, archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of Doulting stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, west porch, transept and a lofty tower with an enriched belfry storey, pierced parapet and pinnacles, and containing 6 bells, rehung and repaired in 1896 at a cost of £50, and a clock placed in 1897 in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: it has Westminster chimes and strikes the hours and quarters: the church was restored and a new aisle built in 1843: the chancel has belonged to an older church and the east window is in the Gothic style of the 14th century; there are sittings for 600 persons. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a vicarage, with Chesterblade chapelry annexed, joint net yearly value £170, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Henry Dyne esq. and held since 1899 by the Rev. William Tylden Dyne M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel seating 300 persons. The Public Hall was erected and opened in 1896 at a cost of £500, and is fully licensed for plays and concerts, and will seat 300 persons. An auction sale of calves and lambs is held at Evercreech Junction twice in each month from February to July, and special sales of fat stock from July to February; there is also a sale of Shire cart horses every year, in September, Messrs. Moody & Sons being the auctioneers. There are also extensive brick and tile works belonging to Messrs. Farrance and Boyton. There are charities of £28 yearly value, for distribution in kind. Evercreech House, the property of Mrs. Sherston, is a mansion in the English Domestic style, now occupied by Major Charles Davis Sherston J.P. Major Charles Davis Sherston J.P. Viscount Portman, Messrs. Hill Brothers, John Purnell Luff esq. Mr. Joseph Allen and Miss Cox are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil, limestone and clay. The land is principally in pasture. The area is 3,800 acres; rateable value, £10,944; the population in 1891 was 1,120.
National School (boys, girls & infants’), erected in 1854, for 300 children; average attendance, 69 boys, 71 girls & 79 infants; with a small endowment for four Blue-coat boys.
