Historical Description

EXFORD is a parish and village, on the banks of the Exe and on the high road from Minehead to Exmoor Forest, 12 miles north-west from Dulverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 11 south-west from Dunster and 12 south-west from Minehead, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Carhampton, Dulverton petty sessional division and union, South Molton county court district, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, with windows of the 14th century, and consists of nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, 70 feet high, containing 5 bells: the east, window and another in the south aisle are stained: the church was restored in 1869 and in 1893 was renovated and the interior walls replastered: it affords sittings for 256 persons. The register dates from the year 1609. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 140 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Ernest Goodwyn Peirson B.A. of that college. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Robert Baker’s charity provides about £24 yearly for clothing (£2 of which go to the parish of Hawkridge), and there are other minor gifts. The kennels of the Devon and Somerset stag hounds are in this, parish. R. A. Sanders esq. is master and P. Evered esq. of Milton’s Rocks, Exton, Dulverton, hon. sec. Minehead, Dunster, Porlock, and Dulverton are convenient places for hunting visitors. Here are the kennels of the Quarme Harriers. Morland Greig esq. of Edgcott, master and owner, who also built the kennels. There is a good hotel here, “The White Horse, ’'' close to the kennels, and the rivers Exe and Barles. A fair is held on the 14th August for cattle and sheep, and, an annual horse show, held on the same day, in connection with the Devon and Somerset stag-hunt. Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. of Killerton, Exeter, who is lord of the manor, Morland Greig esq. of Edgcott, James Phillips esq. of Bridgtown and Minehead, and Mr. Isaac Clarke, of Luccombe, are the chief landowners. The soil is principally shale. The chief crops are oats, turnips, and hay. The area is 5,948 acres, a large portion of which is moorland; rateable value, £2,878; the population in 1891 was 430; in 1901 it was 394.
