The church of St. John the Baptist, originally erected in the 11th century, was rebuilt and enlarged in 1843 by the Mogg family and others, and is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, and a western tower containing 3 bells: there are mural tablets to the Mogg family, and in 1882 the church was new-roofed and six of the windows filled with stained glass; the east window by Mr. Thomas James, of Hallatrow; the west by the late Col. John George Mogg, of Farrington Gurney, and others by Mrs. Mogg, his widow, by Miss Allen, of Farrington Gurney, and Mrs. Cox: there are sittings for 300 persons: in the churchyard there is an ancient stone cross. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Ston Easton, joint net yearly value £60, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Philpott, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Arthur Robert Morrison Finlayson; the Rev. James Charles John Pavey has been curate since 1899, and resides at the Grange, Hallatrow. Here is a large Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1881, and seating about 250 persons. Cattlesales are held here the first Monday in every month. The charities amount to £8 yearly, derived from the interest on £300 (invested in Consols), bequeathed by the Rev. Henry Hodges Mogg, of Ston Easton, in 1850, for the benefit of poor persons in the parish. The Manor House, an ancient mansion, situated at the east end of the village, is the residence of Mrs. Mogg, and has been held by the Mogg family from a period anterior to 1600; the house is surrounded by beautiful lawns, and commands some fine views.
