Historical Description

FITZHEAD is a parish and village, on the road from Wiveliscombe to Bishops Lydeard, 2 miles north from Milverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 6 north from Wellington and 3 east from. Wiveliscombe, in the. Western division of the county, Kingsbury West hundred, Wiveliscombe petty sessional division, Wellington union and Taunton county court district, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. James is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the tower is the oldest portion, and was restored in 1883 at the cost of the Rev. G. R. Gilling-Lax M.A. rector 1861—1900: the nave and chancel were rebuilt in 1849, when the very fine and richly carved oak screen was removed to the western entrance of the church: in 1881 a north aisle with arcade of three arches was added, a new chancel arch built and the chancel decorated, at a cost of £1,000, by Mrs. Knollys, of Fitzhead Court, who died in April, 1882, and to whom a memorial window on the south side of the chancel has been erected by the parishioners: stained glass has also been placed by her children in the four windows of the aisle, representing the “Corporal Works of Mercy”; the east window, erected in 1863, is a memorial to the Rev. F. M. Knollys D.D. a former rector: there are brasses with inscriptions and shields to Major Robert Cannon and Prudence his wife, dated 1664 and 1684; and another to James Edward Knollys, of Fitzhead Court, d. 1892, placed by Lord Ashburton's tenants and other inhabitants of the parish: the church affords sittings' for 220 persons. The register dates from the year 1655. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £105, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Wiveliscombe, and held since 1900 by the Rev. John Nelson Wallis M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, and B.A. of the Univ. of London. Fitzhead Court, an old mansion of some interest, contains' a fine plaster ceiling, with the arms of the Cannon family, who were resident here in the time of Charles II.; it is now the property and residence of George Staunton Staunton-Wing esq. B.A., J.P. Simeon Berry esq. J.P. of Waverley Hall, Ashburton, Devon, is the principal landowner. The soil is red land, and is chiefly cultivated on the Norfolk system of four-course husbandry; the subsoil is the new red sandstone, intermixed with limestone in masses of conglomerate, which burns into tolerable lime, which is used in the neighbourhood for agricultural purposes, and especially as a preparation for wheat. The crops are wheat, barley, turnips and flax. The acreage is 1,208; rateable value, £1,774; the population in 1901 was 241.
