Historical Description

FRESHFORD is a village and parish, near the junction of the rivers Frome and Avon, with a station on the Bath and Salisbury branch of the Great Western railway, and is 5 miles south-east from Bath, 2 ½ north-west from Bradford-on-Avon and 108 from London, in the Frome division of the county, Bath Forum hundred, Bath union, Weston petty sessional division, Bradford-on-Avon county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells: there are monuments to members of the Still and Ash families: the church affords sittings for 350 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1705; marriages, 1706; burials, 1744, but the earliest volume is imperfect and almost illegible. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Simeon’s trustees, and held since 1891 by the Rev. William Edward Chapman. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The cemetery, three quarters of an acre in extent, was formed in 1873, at a cost of £400, and is now under the control of the Parish Council. The charities amount to £2 16s. yearly. In the village are flock mills. Freestone is abundant. Percival Huth esq. who is lord of the manor, and George Edward Baker esq. are the principal landowners. Freshford Manor House was formerly held by the Carthusian priory of Hinton, on the dissolution of which it was granted to Anthony Stringer, at whose death it reverted to the Crown, and was granted by Queen Elizabeth to John Davidson, from whom it passed to the Methuen family, and is now the residence of Percival Huth esq. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The soil is loamy; and the subsoil stone. The area is 584 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £3,194; the population in 1901 was 531.
